Major engine work before 100,000
Discussion
DC2 Integra at 85,000 miles. One of the previous owners had neglected her so about a 2,000 miles into her ownership I got fed up of the constant smoke when accelerating and took her in for a bottom end rebuild. One week and £1,500 later she was all sorted and I enjoyed another 15,000 trouble free miles before selling.
The 2.0 tdi in any VAG will probably need a turbo before 100,000 I have done two recently also the same car has lots of DPF probs £2000+ fitted by the time they have done, diesels are where the problems are. Vauxhall meriva less than 10,000 miles and the engine was lunched, all down to the DPF so I was told.

Not as big a problem as you might believe. Think how many of those engines are on the road, and imagine how few owners have the slightest comprehension how to properly treat a turbocharger - hammering them from cold and then switching them off immediately after full boost, and so on. Then I'm quite stunned there are so few that fail!Friend of mine has one in a Golf, and it's about to hit 100k without the remotest of issues.
As with the chap above who had the neglected Integra, it's almost entirely down to the owner and the car's past treatment!
Going through the extensive history of my 120k E46 328i that is 14 years old, the only thing it has had done to the engine is the crank case breather at 118k.
Apart from that she has just had consumables - tyres, brakes, some suspension work. The engine has been fault free.
ETA - my past cars.
The Astra ate it's piston rings or valve seals around 80k, so needed them replacing. The old ST24 needed a new IMRC when I bought it at 104k, either that or the inlet manifold was gummed up.

The only relevant replies are from people who owned or knew the car from new and had been maintained properly, most are clocked and the only way an Integra would have engine problems at 85k is if it had been run without oil or had dubious history ie clocked.
It is relevant to anyone buying a 2nd+ hand car though, as you don't know how well its been looked after. Just because its got a stamped service book, it might just have had an oil change every couple of years.

I don't think a turbo, injector, DMF ect can really be classed as engine work. Other wise we could include battery, clutch, exhaust ect
Meh. People can post whatever they feel is 'engine work'. I'd say that a flywheel and injectors probably would be classed as engine work. Unless they're service items these days.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
