I have never had a vehicle long enough to have had to replace the tyres on it. In act I'm far from needing to do them on any of my cars at the moment, but, just vaguely looking into it.

Are kumho and falken tyres ditchfinders?

No they're not. Rather good mid-range tyres in fact.

Evergreens seemed to do reasonably well http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Evergreen/EU72.h...

Can't say I've ever heard of them

The cheapset Kumho's are slighly iffy (from personal experience)

I think the new labelling system that has just come into force is going to help you avoid ditchfinders!

I have Falken 452s on my car and am pleased with them - need to replace the rears imminently and will be sticking with the 452s.

If you're going Kumho, you want the model name to start with 'KU' rather than 'KH'- KUs are the sportier ones.

Wet braking and noise / rolling resistance only isn't it? Helps, but why no wear rate, dry performance etc?

Keep off the Chinese "Runway" brand. Mine disintegrated, overheating was suspected but this was with road use and the pressures were correct.

I've got Kumho KU39 (I think that's the right number) and I think they're great. I rate them better than the Pirelli P Zero Neros that came on the car from new.

I had these on my Mondeo and I can't recommend them enough;

In the mid-range you also have Falkens, Kumhos, Uniroyals and Hankooks but they're all more pricey than the Matadors.

I'm running Toyo Proxies on that size on the back of my MG. They seem pretty good and last well.

The Runways were on a set of secondhand wheels I bought, pretty much new, felt really good to drive until I found big cracks developing between the treadblocks. They'd been sold to me on the wheels by a reputable motorsport firm who inspected them, as had I before purchase. The cracks took about 500 miles to appear.

Yes I drive fairly hard but I'm not power sliding every roundabout; with a 135 this would be quite an achievement...

My guess is faulty construction or compound.

Had FK451 and 452 aswell as Ecstas but I've now got Toyo Proxes T1R on my M3. Same price bracket but better wet performance than both falken and kumho whilst keeping grip.

Well the price is right if they're decent tyres...

Just steer clear of any brand with a 'Wang' or a 'Kang' in the name!

IMO It depends on the car and what it is used for, also the BHP and the way the car will be driven, as to weather a tyre is good or not. Plus tyre X on car A will be fine, but tyre X on car B could be st.

As an example, put a falken on a Monaro and "try" driving hard, You will die laugh
as the monaro is very tyre fussy, but drive same car witha falken a 30mph at 2000rpm and you will be fine (god willing) hehe
