hi mark
i need a clutch cable. tried three different ones, first from a capri was too short by a foot, second and third from granada and cortina had different fittings.
was going to send to speedycables but was told to try this lot, just wondered if anyone had used them.

If it's a 2.8 engine, the clutch cable is from an early Cortina IV 2.3 (QH part number QCC 1207)
by early 2.3, I mean the NOT self adjusting clutch version.

Then, just cut off the top plastic 'top hat' bush and the rubber bush with it.

Hey presto - a TVR 280 clutch cable.....

There are a few here but if its anything like mine with the loop fitting at the pedal end then i cant see how they would fit?...
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=c...

I nearly opted for this one from a VW camper as it had the loop fitting at one end..Even if i had to chop the arm end off and use the grub screw fitting it would be better than just plain cable and grub screw fittings at both end..Especially as it always snaps at the pedal end...Ziga

Hi Marcus...Just been trying to find some on-line but to no avail..Mine has this set up, It was probably a get me home fix at some stage..If you use the VW camper type cable and use the loop end then use an end fitting like mine..Unless the end on it actually fits..I have ordered one to see if it is long enough..Cheers..Ziga

I got one for mine years ago for my first 280i from my local motor factors ... seem to remember that it was iether a Ford XR2 or XR3i cable fitted exactly with no mods. i took off the cable what was left of it and took it with me the old school local factors and got the right one off the shelf yes

hi mark / jack
tried all the factors in edinburgh but no joyfrown speedycables will make one up for £45 plus vat! seems a bit steep, but i'll probably end up going with it. i dont want to start flaffing around and probably buggering a new cable.
at least i know what a grub screw is now mark!

I would look into the camper van one purely as it has a loop on the major end that always snaps..If its long enough then it would be perfect..You would need a solderless nipple on the other end as you will need to feed it through the outer cable..The outer cable should be left in place as the fitting on the pedal end fits the mechanism..At least it does on mine..Every year so far mine has gone at the pedal end where the "grub screws"..Actually i think the correct name is "Set screws"..Have frayed the cable over the year of driving..It would certainly make life easier for me to have a loop already in the cable...
Again at a glance even this one for a lawnmower looks ideal..Cut the "L" shape off..Pull through the outer..wrap a piece of masking tape around the cut end and feed it through the existing outer cable on the wedge..Fit the loop over the pedal fixing and a solderless nipple..(Ooohhh misses)..on the other end..Again you would need to know the size of the loop and length of cable..Im not too sure of the stud OD but im sure it has a 10mm nut on it...Ziga

It shouldnt do..I used motorcycle brake cable and just cut the length i need..I think maybe go for the VW camper van cable..At least its a clutch cable and it has the loop on the end..You just need to get a barrel nipple for the other..Which im still trying to find!!..I have emailed the guy as regards to the length of the camper cable..Ziga

The THIRD picture on that list is the CORRECT ONE, for mine at least (QCC1207). I know, I know, it doesn't look right at all, but that black top simply cuts off with a Stanley knife, and cut off the rubber insulator that fits underneath it, remove the steel washer, and then you have a cable which fits into the steel tube on the clutch pedal in the wedge. IT DEFINITELY FITS - I've done one. In fact that third photo shows the plastic cap and insulator (right at the end) and you can see the smaller 'top hat' on outer cable which fits into the wedge pedal.

ALSO as posted in another thread here, my original wedge setup rubbed on the cable and caused it to fail early. Make sure the steel tube (which bolts to the pedal) is not longer than the plastic top on the outer cable.

The second pic might be OK too, but hard to tell from that photo....

Zig, what do you mean by a 'loop fitting' - I'm asking to make sure there isn't a different kind of clutch setup - it wouldn't surprise me if TVR changed it. Mine is an 82 280, so is fairly early one.

NB. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find other Ford models fit as well, so not arguing with alternate suggestions, just that I know that the 2.3 fits and is the right length from actually replacing one...

No worries - I had a vision of a loop made in the (inner) cable so wanted to double check !
I use 'eyelet' for those things... who knows what their proper name is....
Great that you found some pics too - helps to explain what to do.

I was thinking a stock one should be a lot cheaper than a specially made speedy spares one...

I happened to have a 2.3 Cortina when my wedge clutch cable snapped for the first time, and thought "hey - both Cologne engines... I know that wedge has a few Cortina and granada bits..."
so I compared length etc. and then saw it was same cable without those insulator bits...

After my third cable snap in as many years, I had a proper look and found the tube on the clutch pedal was rubbing/fouling on the inner cable and fraying it. After fixing that, clutch was quite a bit lighter, and I'm still on the same cable after 10 years, although to be fair, I don't drive wedge as much as I used to.
