Which are the important modifications to look for?

Join the Bay Area Esprit Group (Northern California) and post that same question there. There's no club dues and I can get you in touch with all the local members. Get you some rides in various Esprits too.

All Esprits of that age that I have seen have bad (very bad) clear coat issues. It seems to flake off in sheets.
