Just a quick question:
I just bought some Caterham Superlight wheels from someone on here. I took them to a tyre fitter at the weekend who brought me over when fitting some 888s. He showed me that two of the wheels required 140+ weights and one was not completely straight when spun on the tyre fitter (wobbled left and right a millimetre or so). Apparently 30 is the normal amount of balancing a wheel will need.

Could this be dangerous at all? I did drive it after fitting to the car and the steering didn't vibrate even at speed, I couldn't tell if the rears were out of kilter although it did feel like maybe it was vibrating a tiny bit.

Thanks

DCL

I bought a new set of 13 superlight wheels last year as a second set. I found the new wheels normally balance quite well with a good quality tyre, but they seldom run perfectly true. Maybe +- 1mm on the rim. It takes a lot to bend a 13 inch without leaving any witness marks but maybe you should ask the seller about the history (15 inch maybe be weaker in that respect). If there's no visible damage, and can be balanced, I personally would be be happy to run them.

Not at all unusual for the Caterham wheels to have a shape to them, even when new. The problem will be in the tyre - 888's are the worst balanced tyres I've ever fitted. Expect to need them re-balanced regularly if you're sensitive to wheel vibration too.

My experience of 13" Superlight wheels (at least early in their manufacturing life) is that they are not the straightest of items.

Cool, thanks for the peace of mind, I'll feel happier about giving it the proper beans now!
