Looking at a possible part-x of my TVR at a non-TVR dealer. Now being asked what I would want for my car... As I have never done the part-x game before, how would one go about determining a price range? Just purely looking at private Chim ads of similar spec’ed cars? What kind of "hair cut" should I be prepared to take? Thanks all for your thoughts.

It may or may not work to your advantage. If the car is in really good condition, then sell it privately, but be realistic with the price. If it is a little rough around the edges and could do with a bit of chassis work etc aim for about £7k ish, but open the bidding a bit higher and allow them to bring you down. Check out something like Parkers Guide for the worst case scenario, which is what they'll be offering. There lack of knowledge about the cars may work to your advantage... scratchchin

Looking at your profile and the fact that it's a 500, there may be a few on here that would be interested... I know of at least two!!!

Agree with both of the posters above - should make about £10-12k as a private sale
(or a privet sale - that's one where the test drive ends up backwards in someone's garden hedge in the wet!)

You'll be lucky to find a non-TVR dealer that actually understands the difference between a 400 and 500 and adjusts their offer accordingly..

It also depends very much on the "price to change" - if you're trading up by say +£10k they'll give you some leeway, otherwise it really won't be worth it to you.

Hi Jan,

Phone around a few TVR dealers and ask what they'd pay for your car as a straight purchase.
Ask your local TVR dealer if you trust him, if he would source a WhateverCar it is you want; and take the TVR as a p/x?
If you have time, try and sell your TVR yourself - although I guess it would be hard just before Christmas to do this.

Rgds,

James

I think that you'll be looking around the £9k mark privately at the moment TBH, providing it has a good service history and is in good mechanical condition. Having been looking for several months and only just purchasing my own 500, I've been watching prices carefully. Advertise it at a higher price and it could well be stuck on there for months. Poor economic climate, lousy summer and wrong time of year are all to blame I think. See the "depressingly cheap" thread for more info!

Hi, I manage a sales department of an Audi dealer . All they will do is Cap it and ring some dealers for underwrites. Unless your car has some problems that won't be seen by the unsuspecting sales person your better of selling privately or directly to a specialist .

Anything you get over and above this is just a discount on the car your buying. Don't kid yourself the dealer will only pay you what they can get for it.

Hi Ged, I'm probably opening a can of worms for saying it on this forum, but I'm leaning towards one of the German variety made in Zuffenhausen. What's happening though is that my new girlfriend is not overly impressed with the car and I know she would appreciate if I would change it. I actually just had to check the original invoice, but I bought the car now almost 8 years ago (yes, I'm only the second owner)... so arguably, it's also time for a change.

So based on Mark's (and others) feedback, it seems that the part-x is a bad idea which kind of makes sense. I already checked with my garage and they suggested to wait a few months and to do a sale or return as I'm not in a hurry.

But based on the feedback I received from some PH members it seems that a well sorted, late 500 is not that easy to find. So maybe going down the direct route will not be too bad after all.

It looks a very nice car. I think you're better off waiting until the spring and selling privately.
