Commission percentages (Broadcast)

I work in the broadcast industry and I have been in my current job since April 2011. My previous job had a fixed fixed commission with an unofficial bonus at the end of the year if I reached my target and if the company did well.
However, this company have recently had a large changes to the management team and have come to me and asked what I want for my year's work. I successfully reached my target last year and I have done much better this year. I find these kind of things very uncomfortable. As a bit of a knee jerk reaction, I asked for double, but they have said lets discuss in detail.
I have googled this and read a few threads on LinkedIn and it appears the 1.8% of gross sales does appear to be be quite low for commission. If people want ti know exact numbers, I may resort to PMs.
I'm after suggestions from other people. Broadcast industry would be useful, but I'm open to suggestions from other industries

Assume you are selling airtime advertising - radio / TV???
I work in media and skirt around the edges of broadcast professionally and otherwise (volunteer host and on management committee of a community radio station that has a couple of radio pros involved as well).
The commission level will depend on a) Your basic package, so a high basic retainer will mean a lower commission. b) the cost of sales and c) the health of the company.
1.8% of GP seems very low. Unless you're doing £10m a quarter. As a very, very rough guide, I tend to work on the basis that your total package - combined salary, car, perks, commission, equates to around 10% of the business you create. So, a £50k package would mean someone is doing half a mil in new biz annually.
This though is very broad and each company / situation will be different but hope this helps as a jumping off point.
