Anybody had any problems with starter motor going tight when hot after driving car.
Has happened numourous times now, when car is hot turn off engine, try to restart and nothing. Wait 10 minutes for things to cool, try again and off she goes all ok.
1st happened at Austec on Rolling road. Checked all wiring is tight, no breaks in cables that could expand and contract.
Could a heat sheild be the answer, is there room to fit one?
Any idea's would be appreciated.
Martin.

Yes - have heard of it .. I'm sure a heat shield
will help.

Martin,
make sure the mounting of the heat shield is electrically insulated from the engine block. A short to earth from the starter solenoid could engage your starter with the engine running, or when you are not around...

Had this happen to me recently when the starter and associated wiring caught fire and the car started itself, luckily it was left in neutral.
Had to chuck the starter away and got a new Bosch one fitted. There was no clearance to fit a seperate heat shield, even with 3mm ground off the solenoid to give as much room as possible.
Depending on how much clearance you have you can get a wrap round heat shield for the starter but on mine the best we could do was weld some plate onto the starter itself to go between it and the exhaust with a small gap behind the plate to try and allow some kind of airflow. Whilst the plate does get hot and transfers heat to the starter through the weld and also via radiant heat it may be helping a little.
If enough room you could try and get some exhaust heat shield tape round the pipe nearest to the starter.
The mechanic I use has also suggested a couple of small sheet metal air deflectors arranged in front and to each side of the starter to try and deflect more airflow over it which considering the cost of the starter I will get round to doing at somepoint before summer.

Thanks Alan.
I'll order one and try it. Have you done your lagging yet, or is that your winter task.

Martin.

I believe so due to the bloody heat. As when it cools it works.

Had similar problem with Ferrari - replaced starter which requires removing manifold from one bank - expensive exercise. There is a heat shield, but it seems this is a common problem!

Is there a way to loosen up the solenoid on your car?
