Buying a private reg.

Can anyone shed any light on how this works?
Looking at purchasing a private plate. Will there be a period where I can't use the car? The site I'm looking at will register the reg to my car FOC, and I need to send them my v5 and MOT certificate.
Will there be a period where I can not use the vehicle?
Do they send me a new tax disc with the updated reg number? Or do I have to relax under the new reg?
Will there be a specific time when the new reg comes into effect?
