BMW E36 ,Oil in the intake manifold . . . . . . . . . .
Discussion
I did stick this in the BMW section but hopefully ill get a few more responses here....
Car is down on power and suffering from a notable increase in engine breaking down to about 1000rpm. (calipers not sticking!)
Car shows no codes. Removed throttle body and it was filthy inside all around the butterfly. What was also immediately obvious was that there was oil in the inlet manifold, enough to put my fingers in there and have a reasonable amount on my fingers.
Is this a failed CCV (crankcase vent valve?)
I also cleaned the ICV which was a little gunky but not that bad and checked for air leaks, spraying car cleaner over the pipes once it was back together and running just to double check and see if there was a change in revs etc.
Bit stumped. CCV doesnt make a noise when removing the filler cap and doesnt seem to have too much suction (i think!).
Cheers!

I'm no E36 expert so take this with a pinch of salt...Car is down on power and suffering from a notable increase in engine breaking down to about 1000rpm. (calipers not sticking!)

If this is the first time you've ever opened the throttle body then I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see quite a lot of oil in there. It shouldn't however be causing you to be down on power, as most of the oil is probably baked in position.
Do you think the car is using any more oil than normal? If so, it could be an issue with the PCV (cheap fix normally) or it might be something a little more sinister.
One thing I've done in the past is hook the PCV up to a plastic bottle (poor boys catch can) to see how much blow-by you're getting.
Cheers,
Yeah not too worried about the baked on stuff on the throttle body, more concerned that alot of oil is getting into the intake manifold, i.e not gungy stuff but fresh runny like oil.
I think its pretty hard to hook the crank case vent up to a bottle as you have then got to suffciently block the CCV so theres not an air leak, I will look into this further though.
She really is flat as a pancake at the moment.

Oil in the intake can be because the the breather system is getting filled with oil rather than just oil vapours. This can be a sign of worn piston rings or a worn bottom end in general.
What mileage does the motor have?
Simple test is to remove the intake and oil recirculation/breather system, give it a good soak to clean it out and then see what happens.

Shes on 120k, 2 previous owners and loads of history. Shes also got a later alusil block as opposed to the Nikasil lined earlier blocks. I havent noticed much in the way of oil use....
Just bought another cat section second hand so going to swap that in and scrap the old one just to make sure its not the cat thats blocked thats causing the power loss. Also just bought a new CCV (even if it isnt that at fault then its coming to the time when the normally fail) so shall fit that and see if that makes a difference.
Something I noted today, start from cold and its lacking in power, let it get up to temp and still no power. Stop the car, let it sit for a while and cool a little but not enough for the guage to drop much if at all and then restart it and for a few minutes a fair bit of the power seems to come back for a while. Odd. Cant work this out......
