BMW seem to have continued their trend of creating weird new niches by making their normal cars uglier and then naming them 'GT'. Here is the new 3-series GT, photographed undisguised for the first time. Can't imagine anyone in the UK many PHers will be buying these. I don't get it, but then again I'm not a Chinese businessman.

And the last 3-series-based 'GT' car: frown

Um, I like that more than the saloon (which didn't set a high bar on my aesthetics meter to be fair).

Clearly. I still think it's horrible, though. hehe I haven't seen many 5-series GTs about, mind.

Whilst the 5 GT is hideous, I rather like the 3 GT. Design going back to the model's roots too to an extent;

Although it's seriously ugly, it's still far better looking than the Porsche Panamera, which has proved that people will buy anything if it's wearing the 'correct' badge.

You know what, if I had the money I'd go for that.

It won't be an M3 but I've been dying for a 3 series size car with a hatchback body for ages. If it's smaller than a Mondeo- the Ford is nice but too big to thread easily through some narrow city streets- then it'll work well for me.

If that was 3 door, it might actually be quite tidy.

I think it looks like a 4 door coupe. Almost a throwback to the z3 breadvan but with added practicality. In true M format this could be an amazing car for the PH family man.

ETA: this will only apply if the bonnet is long enough. I agree that no one would want a humpback saloon.

Buy a 3 series touring then? It's not any bigger than the saloon?

Looks fine to me - but then I drive a Lexus GS 3rd Gen, so what I know about good design?

So like an Audi A5 Sportback but with decent handling and some room in the rear then?

Maybe it's not quite as pretty but I'm not seeing a problem here.

What makes that a GT compared to a normal 3series?
Does adding a door at the back somehow make it a "Grand Tourer"?
