Well I thought I would give everyone a little write up of my experience with my 2010 PDK 911 Turbo so far. Maybe it will be of some help to those out there who are looking to enter into 911 Turbo ownership at some point in the future. I hope everyone enjoys it and this isn’t too boring!

Original purchase thread here:
http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t...

I had previously had a 997 C4S before which I had loved. The only reason I got rid of it to be honest was simply, I fancied a change. So I ended up buying a 430 spider and using it more or less as my daily driver. As some of you can imagine this proved somewhat less exciting as I thought and after about a year decided I needed something more usable on a day to day basis. So off I headed down to my local Porsche garage. Initially I had my heart set of a Gen 1 Turbo. Although I loved the new gen 2 car (I had had a quick shot after it was launched) I didn’t fancy spending that much money. The sales man was fantastic! He insisted I try the Gen 2 car (as at the time they didn’t have a gen 1) and then after when they got a gen 1 in trade gave me a shot of that. Well needless to say after coming from the newer car I was just in owe of its capabilities and decided I couldn’t go for the Gen 1. As I said the salesman was brilliant wink. After a little bit of negotiating and a quick holiday inbetween to soften the blow of the significant financial penalty for the choosing the newer car, I had my very own 911 Turbo.

The car was dropped off the night before I got back from holiday so when I got home the first thing Id did was open up the garage and there it was. I loved the menacing look of the humongous wheels with their subtle black inserts. It looked mean but without being in your face.

So the next few days were filled with some very “spirited” runs and a couple shots of the launch control button biggrin something you couldn’t do in the Ferrari because it kills the clutch. I think it wipes something like 20% off the clutch eveytime it’s used... The differences between the Turbo and the Ferrari were night and day. Some things were better some things were worse, but the overwhelming feeling I got every time I used the car was just how capable and easy it is to drive. I have driven a lot of fast cars in my time but I can honestly say I can’t think of a single car that is as quick on a windy country road. It doesn’t matter what the weather is, whether it’s cold or wet or pouring with rain, the car just grips and goes. No fuss no drama, it just works! The big elephant in the room with the turbo is always the debate as to whether or not it lacks emotion and I can honestly say that to an extent it does, when compared to its Italian rivals. What I would argue however, is that what it lacks in emotion it more than makes up for in outright precision and speed!

The car is comfortable, so easy to drive, visibility’s great, just everything about it works and feels right. It cruises well on motorways, is pretty economical fuel wise (especially for a supercar). I can get 30MPG on a long runs long as you’re not being too silly. Oh and of course it can seat 4 adults which ok the rear seats aren’t Cayenne comfortable, they’re not too bad and I’ve had some friends over 6ft in the back!

The car has had no problems in the entire time I’ve owned it. Oh well apart from one thing. Apparently one of the mechanics had fitted the wrong tyre dust cap to one of the wheels and it was replaced with a new one... Yes that’s it! In two and a half years!!! smile As it’s not my only car I have left it for a month or so without being driven and every time it has started FIRST time! Ferrari could learn a thing or two!... I think for me that statement sums up what I love so much about the Turbo. It just does exactly what you want it to, with no headaches or drama. It’s just starts and goes!

So after about 20 months of ownership I had a moment of absolutely unparalleled insanity and decided that I should buy something a bit more “out there” and use that as my daily driver. So after a little bit of inner debating I ended up with a lime green Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera... rotateangel

...and believe it or not, it’s all been so far so good! I had originally thought I swap the Turbo for the Lambo but when push came to shove I decided against it. My reasoning being that 1) the car was perfect condition and exact spec I would have wanted, so I would probably never be able to get another one & 2) I wasn’t sure how usable the Lambo really would be so thought the best plan of action was to keep the Turbo and see how I get on. Well long story short, I have ended up not using the Turbo as much as I should. I use the Lambo fairly often and I have an old Audi I can use if I want to be a little bit more discreet. So a few months ago I made the hard decision to let her go, but as I was typing up the advert I looked out the window and just couldn’t do it. The turbo was just too good to let go of. So I’ve decided to keep her a little bit longer, get a little bit more use out of her and then finally bite the bullet and let go.

It’s been probably the best all round car I’ve ever owned and having just checked the values recently bloody good value to! I drove the 991 when it came out and although it was fantastic, if I were in the market for one I couldn’t help but walk right past the new car and go for a used Turbo. The big kid inside of me just couldn’t live without that much power! biggrin

Well hopefully that wasn’t too boring for everybody, and you’re all still awake! I’ll attach some pictures of a recent photoshoot my friend did of the car.

Always thought an ideal garage would be Porsche turbo for weekdays and Italian exotic for the weekends - well done!!

Strangely the only other kermit green superleggera driver I know (993Al) came through a Gen 1 Turbo GT2 and then the SL - small world.

Thanks for writing. I would have likely taken LP550-2 just for 2WD to get more differentiation to your already 4WD turbo.

Great write up, and massive respect for having both. Wish I'd had the funds to keep my F430 when I bought my gen 2 RS, perfect combination to have something silly along with a Porsche smile

Looks superb in black.

That looks lovely.
I must stop looking at turbos, I don't need one, I really don't need one.

But I think I'll end up buying one!

I enjoyed reading the write up on the slow train into work this morning, it is nice to know how the washing machine compares against Italy's finest.

To be honest I am not a massive fan of the 550-2, not sure why but it just doesn't do much for me. Plus as I said before where I live I like the security 4 wheel drive gives you when I'm using the car as a daily driver on wet country roads(or as it's turned out with the Lambo a couple times a week). Also, I've got other toys to tick the "2WD drive" box thumbup

As I said they are night and day. The Porsche does some things better and some things worse! The Ferrari was a brilliant car don't get me wrong, however being used everyday did to an extent take the shine off it. I mean apart from the inevitable panic you get every time you park it somewhere, that someone with sign their name in the paintwork or bash it etc. There was also several niggly little issues which as trivial as they sound became a real pain when using the car every day. To open the boot for example you had to unlock the car, put the key in the ignition and then press a button?!?!?!?! Seriously! Newer Ferraris have the button on the key and at least the Gallardo has a lever. The stereo was also pretty poor, I know people say you don’t need one when you have that engine but when you're stuck in traffic it's nice to have some music!
Despite that little moan biggrin I very much enjoyed my time with the 430 and would still recommend one. It was a truly great car!

The Turbo has much more torque so doesn't need to be revved as much. The PDK gearbox is insanely good! As I said you can use Launch control in the Porsche whereas in the Ferrari it will kill the clutch after a few goes! The Porsche is very good at almost everything, it can be a lairy supercar if provoked or a docile daily driver or a long distance GT car. I think that's why some people say it can be a bit clinical. I absolutely love my Turbo the only real complaint I have about it is I wish it had some more noise! But then I am a bit of a hooligan... biggrin
