Out of interest - what was the last mass produced car, sold in the UK that didn't have any computers doing things to keep the engine running/augment the safety or quality of the actual driving of the car?

I don't mean circuitry to run the dashboard display or ancillary items, I mean ECUs which control anything steering/suspension/engine/emissions related?

My thought was something quite late with a carburettor, 1.2 Vauxhall Nova perhaps?

Anything else later than that?

Probably something eastern european - weren't Skoda pushing out carb'd Favorits well into the mid 90s? (Wikipedia suggest September 94)

I did a significant engine overhaul on a Peugoet 405 of mine many years ago. It was a 1989 1.6 petrol and had a carburettor and a distinct lack of 'black boxes' and cabling under the bonnet. It was a pleasure to work on. Not sure much produced since then would be nearly so simple.

Am I right in saying there won't be anything like this after 1993 because of catalytic converters becoming mandatory?

I'm pretty sure that there have been cars with carbs and a cat.

It must be Lada - I think they were still using carbs up until 2006/7?

Although Nascar also ran carb engines until 2011 (they were Carb when Hammond drove one for TopGear), but you could hardly call them mass produced.

It got fuel injection in about 1990, IIRC.

300 series Discovery, produced up to about 1999 didn't have electronic control of the engine (at least, in the diesel models, they were mechanically injected).

This subject was raised in the letters page of Autocar a while back and IIRC it was actually an Alfa Romeo - either a 75 or a 33 IIRC.

Have a look under the centre seat...

I remember my Dad's having a black box under there, and I'm sure that was his R-plate (but could well have been his 51-plate TD5).

IIRC (Which I might not, it was a while ago) my MK2 Astra 1.3 was carb fed and fitted with a catalytic converter.
Yes my 92 Micra had a car & cat also. IIRC there was some kind of frankenstein electronic biz in it to run closed loop, a servo on a jet or something.

Big empty space under mine. My 1999 TD5 however, had lots.

Airbag surely?
Oh yeah, it had one of them, but nothing else, 100% reliable for the 4.5 years I had it.

I had a late '93 Italian Job LE with carb & cat.

The emmisions regs that brought in Cats effectively killed the carb.

The box under the seat was for the EGR valve, most of which will have been blanked off by now anyway...
