Hey everyone.

Thinking of taking SWMBO to Paris for a weekend in January, probably will go from 10th/11th Jan - 13th Jan.

Would like to go to a few restaurants and maybe a bar or two, see some sights etc.

So first question - which areas are the best to stay in? Im thinking it would be better to stay near a fairly lively area with a choice of decentish restaurants and 'commute' to any attractions in the day as needed (rather than the other way round)???

Price range probably 300 quid for 3 nights in a double room for a hotel.

All comments / benefits of previous experience welcome.

Second question, given the flights are about 180 via squeezyjet is ther anywhere else that would be recommended / should be considered rather than paris for about 450 - 500 quid all in for 2 people? (Flying from Bristol)

Cheers!

Why not get the Eurostar rather than flying? Paris airports are a very long way out of the city, you could probably get to London in the same time you'd spend on the Metro into Paris at the other end.

My and my OH went to Rome at the end of January this year. She loved it, we (I smile) paid £550 for 4 nights from Monday to Friday including flights and b+b, so I'd expect 500 would be OK for 3 nights.

Pricewise, you'll find a lot of European cities to all be similarly priced when you get out there.

Re: Paris, I'd be getting the Eurostar rather than flying. Much easier and more convenient imo. We stayed in Montmartre (Chat Noir Hotel) and had a great time. Rough Guide to Paris was very helpful.

Go to Rome instead. It's a staggeringly beautiful city with friendly locals and fantastic food if you stay away from the tourist traps with loads of sights to keep you occupied. Paris is full of French people-why would you want to endure them? wink

Joking aside, we went from Bristol to Rome and stayed at the Villa Morgagni which is right beside a tube station and is ideal for exploring. It should be within your budget as well.

We've just returned from 2 nights staying off Grenelle (just by the tower). Nice area and good metro links. Paris didn't quite have the 'sparkle' we expected but that may be down to personal preference. It was a nice place and we enjoyed it, maybe comparing to much to New York (last Christmas).

has anyone booked the hotel + train on the eurostar website? Or will it be cheaper to do it separately?

Rome is better. Just my personal opinion.

If it must be Paris then Hotel Ares is pretty nice, a fellow PHer recommended it me for the second week of my honeymoon and it was perfect. Very classy and just around the corner from the Tower.

The Ares is where we stayed and would also recommend. 'Previous', did you book Paris in the end?

You won't get in without booking but eat here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g18...

It's small, it's cramped, it'll be better if you can speak french, but it'll be properly delicious!

bit of a curve ball here but have you considered driving???

Chunnel for £100 return and instead of Paris hook a left out of the tunnel and 45 mins later your in Brugges. Lovely romantic place, great beer, great food and a lovely place to be.

Personal prefference but I though Paris was a sthole and would never go back.
