I don't think this has been asked before, sorry if it has. I was thinking about this today after I saw a Mazda 121
Why didn't Ford ever make an 'MX5'? Surely they could have had them made by Mazda and stuck their badge on it. With the MX5 being such a success you would have thought that Ford would want a piece of the action, the MX5 seemed to come out around the time when Mazda where selling what looked like Fords but with their own badge on them.
Anyone got any ideas?

...why didn't anyone else?
The Z3 was too expensive to be a direct competitor, the Barchetta was front-wheel drive, the MGF was mid-engined. The MX-5 stands out partly by default.
I say this as a fan of the MX-5, but part of their cult status comes by default; they are pretty much the only small, affordable, front-engined rear-wheel drive roadsters around.

But no one else was sharing platforms with Mazda in the way that Ford were (were they?). It just seems odd that Ford didn't ever put a blue oval on an MX5 and call it their own. I doubt we'll ever know, just something that struck me today. The Z3 was too expensive to be a direct competitor, the Barchetta was front-wheel drive, the MGF was mid-engined. I wonder how a Ford MX5 would have sold compared to the Mazda?

Anything Ford had to do with Mazda, goes wrong.
Anything Ford didn't get involved in, MX5.. Is a brilliant car.
See a pattern here?
Mrs Stemll's Mazda 5 is a CMax, the Mazda3 is based on a Focus and the Mazda6 is based on a Mondeo. All perfectly good cars.Anything Ford didn't get involved in, MX5.. Is a brilliant car.

On the other hand, pre-Ford they had the MPV, 323 and 626. Not so good cars.

323/626 are dead reliable, MPV is reliable too.. Not much of a looker though.

I belive my CX-7 is an evolutionary orphan. Despite having similar looks to a Kuga, I am told it is not related to any other non-Mazda car apart from a bit of Ford Focus suspension.
Anyone know more. I'd be interested to know.
It is abit inbred.. Mazda 3/6 MPS engine, Mazda5 rear suspension and Mazda MPV (Asia) front suspension. Not sure about Platform though.Anyone know more. I'd be interested to know.
It's not related to the CX5 though, thats a completely new chassis and engine.
