Sonic Boom

Holy mother of god, what a bloodly amazing noise!!

I've just heard two sonic booms in close (very close) succession in my area (LFA 7) Mid Wales...I'd love to know what the fly boys are up to to allow them to go supersonic round here!

Used to hear the faint sound of the boom at my nans in Liskeard, Cornwall, as Concorde went supersonic over the Atlantic.

Something I will never forget.

We had one over Shropshire last year when a Typhoon apparently had to lose height rapidly because of a cockpit pressurisation problem.

BOOM-BOOM, it really rattled the windows

My folks used to have a caravan down at Burnham On Sea.

A regular highlight - in fact the only highlight of going to BoS - was the sonic boom emanating from Concorde as she accelerated out over the ocean.

The boom used to shake the windows of the clubhouse which scared the living crap out of the oldies!!!

A great sound to hear which is much missed these days.

It's the first time I've heard it, hopefully not the last I have a feeling it was quite possibly the USAF as there were two F15's dogfighting further up over the hills heading north...I wish I'd been closer

It's pretty unusual - I believe they either need clearance to do it for operational reasons (such as the helicopter that was intercepted over Bath last year) or it has to be an emergency that means they have to lost altitude quickly. i think it's pretty hard to do accidentally now - so either a QRA flight that was given permission to go supersonic, or an emergency.

That pic was posted when I started a thread back in '09 about low flying where I'd just bought my smallholding. Iirc, someone suggested I check my roof I'm thinking of painting a large 'RAF' on the roof of my garage as they'd see it very easily (one side is 11M x 7.5M) All going well it's result in a few more fly bys!
