Any members of the aforementioned constabulary on here? In particular, 2 that pulled a grey RX8 on the M3 on Saturday morning? If so, thank you. Thank you for the friendly manner and the interest in the car and, whilst I can't bring myself to thank you for the points and fine themselves, I do thank you for allowing me the opportunity to "escape" with only 3 points when I know my speed most definitely exceeded that allowed by even a generous degree of leniency.

I do have a couple of questions around "the pull" though, as a speeding fine newbie!

1) How can the police on the bridge prove that the car they lasered was the one they stop? There are no photos taken so, is it just the word of the 2 officers (one of whom almost certainly couldn't have seen a number plate)?

2) Why was I followed, at a distance, for about 20 minutes after the lasering before being pulled? Was this to see if I was generally being a nutter or driving sensibly, if a tad fast, to help make a decision on the punishment?

Cheers,

G.

I think you've answered your own questions there to be honest.
Yep if they say you were doing x speed and book you for it then x speeed it is. Your word against bib is not going to hold much sway IMHO.
Yes they probably followed you to make sure you weren't a danger hence 'getting away' with a lesser spped. Had it been a straight scamera then it could be a lot worse from what you infer.
Hants were one of the last authorities to introduce scameras and to be honest what I have seen they are generally very reasonable with their policing methods on the roads (except scumhampton were there are lots of scameras, but thats another story).
Too late now I know, but anything parked on or near an overhead pass on a fast stretch of dual/Mway is worth slowing down for IMHO .

I'd agree with you about them seeming quite reasonable. The guy who stopped me said that, if they followed the rules (10% plus 2mph) they'd have to stop almost everyone and that he and his partner usually allowed up to 95 if conditions were good.

As for spotting them, I did and slowed but slightly too late as I was watching a BMW in the middle lane who was threatening to move out. This was also the reason that I was going so fast in the first place incidentally, to try and clear him so that he could move out. Will make people wait in future.

Doesn't need the word of 2 police officers...1 will do...Same if you're caught with no seat belt, going through red light, urinating in street etc etc.
You can plead guilty to such offences and pay up/accept points or go 'not out' and elect for court and the magistrates will decide who to believe, you or the Bib.

As for waiting to stop you...could be many things...they might want to see if you commit any other offences or on the turn of the coin if you moderate your driving. They might also be deciding on a safe and suitable location to stop you. Also checking your registration number to see if anything is of interest. (you don't know who you are stopping, you see)

Especially southbound on the A46 north of Leamington/Kenilworth. There, the van parks on the left end of the bridge so it's hidden by roadside bushes and the lefthand bend until it's just too late -- but people jam their brakes on anyway. Excellent way to improve road safety along that stretch....not.

must get right and left hands sorted

A3 travelling north to portsmouth : Police sit at liphook junction ( after hindhead single lane crossroad )

There is a large earth berm which hides them, but you can just see the lights poking out the top.

Its very naughty location as it is the first opportunity to put your foot down after hindhead and
clear the numpties/HGV's

Much worse behaviour goes on at hindhead junction itself, but guess where they always park ?
I suppose I am now going to prosecuted and banned from driving for revealing this.

Gavyn,

In addition to Street's good advice, the delay in pulling you over was probably to run your number through the computer and to gather any info thay can before stopping and talking to you.

Doing check on the PNC has been mentioned on another thread recently, but we are not always in a rush to give a ticket - the original offence may lead to better things!

Like all the many threads running at the moment on SP&TL have discussed ;

We CAN do more than a solitary camera can!

WE wish there was more or US about too!

Keep your eyes peeled next time!

Thanks for the replies guys, especially Streetcop and robocop. I would much rather have you guys out there than the cameras, even now, after having fallen foul of you!

So, it's with the utmost politeness that I say I hope I never have to talk to you ever again!!

Only go past the one on Newgate lane out of Fareham and the one out of Pompey on the M275 start. Need to be a bit careful then .

An impressive feat, considering Portsmouth is on the south coast

Thanks for the tip though, the A3 is one of my favourite blasts....

I hear you, and I've seen them go off many a time!

Mungo, do you also live (or patrol) in Pompey?
