Registering a pre 1960 vehicle?

So when I have registered classic cars in the past, mostly american its fairly straight forward.

You fill out a form V55
Take import papers and duty paid-reciept
Proof of insurance
Take a valid MOT certificate and you are away

How do you register a car that pre 1960? Do you do all of the above apart from the MOT?

I have been on the DVLA website and have requested the forms but wanted to run a few things by you helpful chaps.

What I wan to do is register my car before its all rebuilt. As I don't need an MOT does the car need to be running to register it?

As my car doesn't require an MOT can I just simply insure it and send off the paperwork?

It may need to be inspected right? Which could be done on a trailer.


If anyone has been in this position and can offer advice it would be appreciated. I realise I may have to finish it and then register it.

AFAIK you still need an MOT to do that.

This is the case for transferring reg numbers away from pre 1960 cars.

I thought that imports would need MOTing too in order to get registered, but it seems not.

I registered an imported '20s car the other week at the local DVLA office, and while they accepted my new MOT cert, they said it was no longer required. All I needed was insurance, dating certificate, and import duty papers.

Someone on my forum says that he got the same answer when enquiring about registering his MGA that had come back from the USA.

I guess If I can present the car for inspection and provide documents such as insurance and other papers then it should be fine.

Well thats the only way I can interpret it. No MOT requirement means the car doesnt have to run or be in a roadworthy condition I assume for the purposes of Registration?

I am jumping the gun, but it would be nice to get the V5 in my hands sooner rather then later.
