Assuming a T plate 3.4 has had a replacement engine (don't know why)in the last few years would there have been any changes made to the IMS or would it be the same design as the original?
I'm waiting to hear about the whys and wherefores but assuming its not a Hartech engine but a crated OPC one then same risk as the original?

Well it's not an unreasonable assumption to make, but it's still not a given that a car this old will have had a new engine, particularly without knowing anything about the car in question. Plenty of older 996s make big miles simply with quality maintenance.

Replacement engines came with a later generation of ims (slightly better than original, but inherently a flawed design) and something like a ninth iteration of the rms seal....

Based on what I've been told the replacement engine could be the 1st or the last 3.4l (in this case) engine made.

All you can be sure of is it is either new (a new 3.4l engine and not a newer engine sleeved/destroked to bring the displacement down from say 3.6l to 3.4l) or a re-manufactured 3.4l engine, one that might have suffered a mild upset on the engine factory assembly line/test line or was removed from a car under warranty and returned to the factory to be well re-manufactured, freshened up.

Thus you can assume, have to assume the replacement 3.4l engine has the same risk of any failure/issue as any 3.4l engine.

Hi, if it was supplied from Porsche exchange unit then it will have the 997 intermediate shaft and bearing installed. Do not know of any of these later bearings that have given trouble and they have been out there long enough now.

Aren't internet forums great? Before Mike came on with his absolute knowledge a layman like me would have believed the apparently authorative posts before it.

The first 996 I ever had was a 1997 in about 2000/2001 and had had a replacement engine - a bit early for a 997 intermediate shaft bearing surely?
