On a 2.2 toyota avensis - dealer fitted a new engine & new injectors last week

however a trip to birmingham confirmed what i was getting with the new engine that the fuel consumption is alot higher.

on the old engine birmingham and back was done on £30 with fuel to spare.

today its guzzled around £40. the price in the petrol hasnt gone up that much to affect the amount of fuel going in the car so i doubt it is that.

is it normal in an engine settling in period for the consumption to be high or is it something i need to go back to teh dealership with?

It's normal. Engines take thousands of miles to bed in fully and 'loosen up'.

Yep as said, all normal.

New engines need to bed in. Tolerances will be tighter than the old engine therefore more internal friction and as a result more energy loss. More fuel is used to produce the energy required to drive in a style that you used to do with the old engine.

You will find that it will steadily improve over the next few thousand or so miles smile

In the meantime, make sure simple things like tyre pressures are correct.

I got a brand new little Citroen C1 last year (Toyota engine in it, come to think of it) to commute in instead of my SL. I was pretty shocked when on the first tank it managed 44mpg. However it got better and after a couple of weeks it was up to 63mpg.

Was it head gasket failure that killed the old 2.2, by any chance?

It can take up to 10,000 miles for a new engine to bed in properly. Also the temperature has dropped significantly these past few days, which will see an decrease in MPG.

All that jazz

Poor form PH nono. Over 8 hours have gone by without someone saying you need to thrash the fk out of it to properly bed it in...
