As part of the festivities related to the 90th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, the ACO is asking you to vote for the most iconic cars of each decade.
They won, they shone, they overcame adversity and made history.
Three are proposed for each decade for you to choose one. The election closes on the 15th of January 2013.
Following this extensive consultation, a panel of ten experts will meet in February to finalize the selection, the public favourite counting as one vote.
A major exhibition in Paris in the second quarter of 2013 will have thirty cars for sale and of course the ten most iconic cars elected by race fans from the four corners of the world.
These cars will then be part of many prestigious events before the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013, on the 22nd and 23rd June.
There is no time to lose! Especially as some voters will be rewarded with prestigious prizes including pit-walk passes, a complete collection of yearbooks, tickets, ACO clothing collection... (full list and conditions of participation at the bottom of the form).
Some interesting inclusions and, indeed, omissions from the ACO's list. They won, they shone, they overcame adversity and made history.

But still, some strange choices indeed!
which opens the obvious question. What would YOUR top 5 iconic lM cars?Mine would be: Audi R8 (the win ratio is probably unbeatable), Porsche 911 (all derivatrives, and almost winning in a standard car in 79). D-type (ask anyone to draw a le mans car, chances are it'll be a D-type), Mclaren F1 (for winning 1st time out, changing the game) and the Bentley speed six, whose teamwork, glamour and success made Le mans the legend it is.
Audi R8, too.
Dauer 962. Final incarnation of an already legendary car.
McLaren F1.
Toyota GT-One. (yes,3 90's cars, 2 if you count the 962 as a '80's car)
Jaguar C-type.
And a lot more.
But missing the 962? Guess they say 962=956?
And the car that has appeared most of all and has the most class wins? The 911?
Could be a lenghty discussion, but 3 cars per decade is a little bit too lean!

Speed 8 is half a R8....
But still, some strange choices indeed!
There was a very good Motorsport magazine article (I think, may have been Racecar Engineering) about the Speed 8 with the designer, Peter Elleray. He would forcibly challenge the notion that the Speed 8 was half an R8 I think But still, some strange choices indeed!
.Agree though, the R8 is one of the most glaring omissions from the list.

Engine and transmission was the same.
And a lot if not all Joest team members were running the show!
From memory of the article (I'll have to try and find it) the engine was indeed initially from the R8 for the first year, but the transmission was not, it was bespoke. Subsequently the engine was modified specifically for the Speed 8. It really did give the impression that Elleray was a little miffed with the general perception that the car was an R8 with a lid. In actual fact, it shares more theoretical DNA with the R8C, which was also designed by Elleray at RTN (but again, he explained that there was very little physical cross over between the two cars)And a lot if not all Joest team members were running the show!

As it seems, the Bentley did share a lot of ideas with the R8C, but especially on how to not do them!
