AARRRG local news on about traffic calming.
Discussion
My god there has just been a report about a group of kids who have nomintated a road as the most dangerous in Britain to cross.
you take your life in your hands etc. its really scarey.
Que local busy body to complain that the council hasnt put traffic calming measures in place.
The road is hard to cross MMMMM I would have though a pelican crossing/pedestrian crossing would have cured this but oh no. Speed speed speed.
Use your brains.
PS in the report they showed the kids crossing right in front of a car that had to slow right down and stop. There were no cars behind it and they all crossed in a big group
so the first 3 or so got across and the rest turned back.they appeared to be in a state of confusion as what to do.
How about a bit of road saftey traing as well.
Hell no lets just put a camera up.that will cure it.

I remember seeing that on my local news too.
What made me stop and think, was that how can a group of kids at the same school decide that their particular road was the most dangerous road to cross in the country? Did they really travel around to all the other schools? I think not.
Yes, a pelican crossing would sort ot all out, but sadly it seems that they would rather cars slowed from 30mph to 20mph than safely stop at some traffic lights, idiots!

Had to make a good show for the camera. Electric cattle prods should be legalised for use on jaywalkers, that'd make the little oiks think twice about stepping out in front of you.
It's this removal of responsibility from pedestrians again, so that all the blame, irrespective of context, rests with the motorist.
Besides which, the kids don't have any opinion at all.....they just agree with everything the lentil munching primary school teacher tells them.
I saw a new 'great' idea on the telly a few weeks ago, about a scheme which the Dutch have been trialling. Basically it involves narrowing the lanes and removing the pavements so that the pedestrians walk amongst the traffic. Any parents on here that are worried at the prospect of this?? I sure as hell would be. J.

Actually along the same lines, (I can't find the link at the moment) the Dutch also tried a scheme where they removed all but essential signage and paint from the roads. Without the white lines dividing the lanes, drivers felt much more vulnerable and drove slower, they had to think for themselves and keep their wits about them. Accidents were reduced significantly and this should be a model for road safety. However, it'll never catch on here because drivers might have to use their brains.
We have quite a contradiction here, on the one hand driving is being dumbed down so that any idiot can pilot a vehicle, but on the other hand all the responsibility is being placed on the drivers head, a recipe for future disaster.

We sent back an Oxford Reading Tree book recently that my 6-year-old daughter brought home from school.
It was all about a nasty company building a horrid new road. The nice local villagers mounted a nice non-violent protest after finding some lovely protected species on the route of the proposed horrid new road and stopped the nasty development.
Strangely, there's no book in the series which puts the alternative point of view.
