To kick off our new 2004/2005 programme of events, The IMechE Automobile
Division (Essex Centre) would like to invite you to our next lecture on 15th
September 2004:
TVR - Design and Development of a Low Volume Sports Car
TVR have been on the same site in the North West of England since 1970, but
over the years the site has grown to 200,000 square feet. Now employing
about 400 people, TVR is one of Blackpool's largest industrial employers.
Every TVR is built to a customer's specific order and takes about 650 man
hours to build over the course of a four week period. Such bespoke
hand-built craftsmanship combined with high technology is the essence of
what TVR is all about.
The very latest engineering technology is used to enable TVR to produce
simple and elegant solutions to problems of how to hand-build such
sophisticated cars in such small volumes. It is only at the stage where a
design has to be compromised in order to mass-produce it, that TVR parts
company from high tech. This, the first lecture of our new programme, will
be "A Virtual Tour of the TVR Factory" emphasising some of the problems that
occur with small volume manufacture as well as the solutions to overcome
them.

The speaker will also touch upon the design philosophy relating to a niche
market product that does not always compete purely in the automotive market,
as well as some basic commercial business realities that result from working
for a small vehicle company.

The talk is open to the public and both members and non-members are
welcomed, so please bring along any friends or relatives who may be

Neill did a similar talk at Leeds University about a year ago and very interesting it was too. I am sure that this is worth attending.

I have been advised that they want as many TVRs in the visitors car park as possible.


As mentioned there is a speed hump which can be avoided by turning into the adjacent car park and then through to the visitor's car park where they want us anyways.

I believe they are trying to have someone on the gate to point in the right direction...
