"An 82-year-old lollipop patrol man has died in hospital after being struck by a car in Hampshire.

The man was hit by a car in Tempest Avenue, Waterlooville, near Queens Inclosure Primary School just after 15:00 GMT on Wednesday.

He was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital but later died.

The 21-year-old female driver of the Nissan Micra was arrested at the scene and later released on bail. Officers have appealed for witnesses.

The pensioner, who had worked as a patrol man for the school for about 10 years, was wearing a reflective tabard and carrying his lollipop.

He was struck by the car having just escorted a parent across the road.

It is understood that, as leaving time from the school is 15:20 GMT, no child witnessed the accident."

How can this happen? I find it unbelievable?
From BBC website. oh and "It is understood that, as leaving time from the school is 15:20 GMT, no child witnessed the accident." - Does this make it ok then?!

Sad but believable. Lots of drivers don't pay enormous amounts of attention - perhaps especially young people (today moreso even than young people even a few decades ago).

Also, old people tend to die quite easily.

+1.

No child saw it (thankfully), you'd have thought someone would have seen it, brake will be after a 5mph limit there probably as well.

Quite. Even the shock of a relatively small accident would be enough to cause a heart attack or similar probably :|

Was posting much the same only had to reboot the modem - grrrr!

If paying attention, would have been hard to miss a zebra crossing and anyone on it, let alone a high-viz-jacketed lollipop carrying person. Very sad!

In my experience, Nissan Micra drivers are asian women that should never have been given a licence. Perhaps that is just West Yorkshire though
