Found a couple of sheds

1999 Alfa 156 2.0 twin spark (manual) Mot'd till Nov 2013 for £695

Ford Focus ST170 (Mk1) 12 months Mot for £995

Mechanically they're in good fettle both have service histories, recent cam belts and both have covered 75-80k Miles... Cosmetically both are clean, some minor rust bubbles on the Focus sills (you can feel them but you need to shine a light on it to see them) and the Alfa has a dent the size of a 50p on the drivers side front wing.

Which one should I go for?

Alfa - if you're prepared to list it you can run it too. Much more exciting than the Focus (which is a great car, but rust-prone).

Alfa, I've only driven one but it was lovely and a great place to sit, it was also a T spark and was quite rapid for what it was.

Plus it's £300 cheaper than the Focus, spend the change on some of the things that need replacing and you'll be laughing.
