I decided to venture out earlier to the local supermarket, some three miles away. Because I live in a rural area on a hill outside town (where the snow was a couple of inches deep) I took the 4X4.

As I set off the main A road was also covered in snow to a depth of about one inch.

I travelled a few hundred yards and saw cars had been abandoned and people walking here, there and everywhere (including for some reason down the middle of my lane).

As I dropped into town I noticed a long line of cars (which in total apart from a few gaps was more than a mile long).

I was travelling slowly due to the snow and cars ahead of me so I stopped every now and then to talk to other 4X4 drivers and tell them that they may as well move out and overtake the standing traffic as they could get through. None of them it seemed later had taken my advice.

I got to the supermarket by outflanking the main road and using the side streets.

After my shop which in total lasted about 30 minutes I set off home.

I pre planned a route that I knew would cut out half of the tail back and this went well.

Once I was back on the main road I still had a sizeable line of traffic to overcome. My plan was to drive on the wrong side of the road and utilise my 4X4 ability by mounting the pavement should on coming traffic present a problem.

My problem however was solved by an unlikely source: An ambulance with blues and twos going.

I pulled out behind the abulance and followed him right up the road overtaking some of the 4X4 drivers I had earlier spoken to.

The abulance turned off down a side street before the road was clear. I carried on the wrong side of the road and ended up behind a car being pushed by a police man. The police had arrived with a few men to try and clear the road. I overtook the skidding car and wound my window down to talk to a police man in the middle of the road.

He said "can you get through?" I said "yes" and he went "go on, go on!"

If anyone had challenged my actions I would have said, I'm merely using my initiative and vehicles abilty to help ease the congestion on this busy road.

All in all a most interesting drive.

I fear responses so far may be disappointing the OP.

Nothing I didn't expect.

Though I was hoping it would encourage discussion on people using or not using their brains while driving and not being like sheep, sat there in a line when you could if you used your gumption move out and carry on with your journey.

By risking a head-on collision?

Wow. Who will tell tomorrow night's thrilling tale of not crashing? Tune in tomorrow to find out.

I sense a Syndrome moment coming: brag about being a driving god in snow, then crash. I eagerly await the "I fked up" thread.

Not really possible at the speed (or lack of) that people were doing. I know the road well and I have done this before.

Of course you could have towed the car causing the obstruction using your 4x4 and initiative, thus easing the journey for a mile of stuck traffic.

But you didn't.

There was no actual "obstruction" though, the road was not blocked. It was simply people skidding about not getting moving. There was no single car that needed towing.

I hope you were selective with the drivers you stopped to talk to, there are a lot of knobs who drive 4x4s.

The problem is if everyone starts pulling out onto the wrong side of the road, it'll add to the chaos. I know what you're saying OP, but fortunately it seems everyone else who posted in this thread so far would also have stayed in line for hours and hours, meaning you can make (somewhat dubious) progress.

I love pulling out into fresh snow and gunning it past everyone at ridiculous speed. Everyone's flashing their lights and beeping their horns, presumably congratulating me on my awesomeness, yes?

They were all Discovery 2's, Freelanders and pickups. Mostly farmer type people.

I can beat this.

Today it's only rained where I live, and I haven't had to drive anywhere so I too haven't had any sort of crash and retain my driving god status.
