So my car failed its MOT today, it failed on the emissions test, (Lambda sensor after 2nd high idle test) and for 'Rear exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gasses', which i'm guessing is the backbox? (not a thing wrong with it visually, certianly no leaks) Or does that mean something else?

It also failed on a 'rough' rear wheel bearing, Anti Roll Bar bushing - something I was going to replace anyway, and a crack in the windscreen (contacting autoglass or similar tomorrow). The windscreen I thought might fail, but wasnt expecting emissions or exhaust issues.

However, the one that suprised me was the 'Offside front CV joint gaitor damaged to the extent that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt etc'. Having replaced the driveshafts as a pair not 2 months ago, with new gaiters included this seemed very strange.

Heres the side that failed

and the side that passed.

The darker marks are where the road dust hasnt yet settled.

The inner o/s CV boot looked as good as new, you can only just see it through the spokes of the allow wheel as the undertray prevents viewing from below.

So can any MOT testers or more qualified mechanics than myself explain what caused the fail result of the CV boot, from the provided images?

No problem there if there was a split then cv grease would be everywhere around the boot and wishbone unless there is a split on the other side but looking at that should be a pass.
As for the emisions then put a new rear section exhaust take it for a good fast drive before the retest and it should pass the emissions.

Exactly what I thought. Not mark on either side, is this a dodgy add on hoping they'd get more work come their way or something?

Could well be it's a good money earner for garages parts only cost under a fiver for the part and with boots that can stretch no need to remove the cv joints to put them on. On most car i can replace one in under 20 mins the garage will charge 1hr for the labour. When you take it for the retest just ask why it failed could be an error when entering in details or trying to have it on.

Was this a council-run MOT station, or a commercially operated one with a sideline in servicing?

I'm guessing the latter..

easy enough to test if an exhaust is leaking on most exhaust, cover the tail pipe with your hand, if there are no leaks it will be build up pressure very quick and you'll struggle to keep you hand covering it, if you don't really feel much pressure build up and can hear a hissing type noise, then you have a leak

Could be, I did ask. They seemed suprised when I said i'd replaced them both not 2 months ago and then couldnt decide between the 2 blokes there if it was the inner or outer.

Its a tyre fitting outfit, having just checked their website they do services. They couldnt even do the work if I took the bait, over an hour waiting in there and almost every phonecall was them ordering parts from places I can buy parts myself at the retail price, having to blag trade discounts.

So what should I do now? I was always taught a bad outfit deserves a visit from VOSA. We all get a bad reputation because of these sorts of things.

It won't have failed on a lambda sensor because there is no test that can prove it.

What it will have failed on is the lambda reading, which if the exhaust has a leak will go out of range on the weak side so fix the exhaust and it should cure the emmissions hassle.

Nothing wrong with the boot.

The only thing i can see from the first cv pic,and it might well be just the angle of the pic,is you cant see the inner clamp,is it still fitted? agreed there might be grease showing if its not,but if they have only recently been replaced and the clip came off very recently ..... second pic clearly shows both clamps fitted,

Or they might just be trying it on ....

Ahhh top advice, the exhaust did fall off once and is securely reattached with genuine parts but might benefit from some more gun gum around the catalyst joining. I'd assumed id always be able to hear it if it was leaking.

Re rigga its the angle of the picture, i'm not as far 'in' to the arch in the first.
