200 TDI alternator
Discussion
I've got a 1992 Defender 90 which I believe that alternator has gone. I'm looking about for a replacement, maybe a refurbished item.
I know that the 200tdi came in a few different cars and with this slightly different lay outs? (My friend has a 200tdi engine transplanted into his Defender from a Disco, and I think it's slightly different?) Anyhow, here poses the silly question. Is a 200tdi alternator a universal thing, or do I have to find out where the engine original was sourced for/ from?

Defender 200TDi had a Lucas A127 alternator, usually rated 45 amp, with a 3 pin plug in connector on the back. A127s turned up on all sorts of vehicles in various power outputs and configurations. Main variations are power output, connector type and orientation of the two mounting lugs on the front plate relative to the one on the rear. Discovery 200 used an A127 with post terminals and the opposite 'hand' front plate to the Defender, also higher output (65 amps I think).

So with that in mind, for a simple swap, I should source a defender one. Would a higher output one be a bonus? But would it mount okay?
Unless you are running a whole load of high current accessories (multiple spotlights, winch etc), 45 amps is plenty. The Defender engine wiring harness isn't the highest spec cabling in the world anyway, and I wouldn't want to put much more current through it. Part number is STC229. I am such a Land Rover anorak.
