So, I've flown with Easy Jet 4 times since the new allocated seating policy has come into effect and what may have sounded like a good idea (no fighting for a seat and EJ make a few more £'s) is a bit of a nightmare.

You may think that you might not now have to queue at the gate any more but if you are at the back....expect your luggage to go into the hold and not in the aircraft! Once on the plane people are finding their seats and realising there is no space for their luggage above them. Late arrivals onto the plane were having real problems storing their bags anywhere near where they are sitting.

Before any of you start saying 'if you pay peanuts expect rubbish service' etc etc. I understand this but Im just letting you know that its no easier with this new system.

So instead of the late boarders struggling to find space, it's people sitting at the back as they are boarding last?

I really dont know how the seating is allocated! It seems to be spread out all over the plane. On a couple of occasions there was boarding on the front and rear of the plane.

They should board people rows 1-15 first, then 15-30 etc etc instead you have a free for all once on the plane to find seats and luggage space. I know this isnt a lot different than before but it just didnt work.

Budget airlines generally charge for Hold baggage which explains a little why so much is carried on.. Not used easyjet for a while so dont know their policy.

@ OP if easyjet dont charge, did you actaully need your hand luggage during the flight, or was it particularly valuable? If not, why dont you just check it?

Regarding boarding procedure, assuming only borading from the front, would be more efficient to load the rear passengers first - that way they arent stood around in the aisle whilst others are trying to get past.

There is a fairly obvious reason why seats are distrbuted so that people are sat all over the plane, and not concentrated all together in one group at the front or back.....

Even for airlines whcih dont charge for hold luggage I see more and more people taking larger and larger 'Hand luggage' on board. At least half the flight will usually have trolley cases now, and most of those also carry other junk (handbag, laptop etc). I can pack for a week in an average hand luggage trolley case.

People dont seem to realise that aircraft overhead luggage bins are not designed around intending the maximum hand luggage size for every single passenger to be taken on board.

Also, even given that more and more hand luggage is taken on board, people for some reason place all their belongings in the overhead storage in such a way that makes least efficient use of the available space. Then wonder why they cant get all thier belongings in.

End result, surprisingly, not enough room.

Only way to fix this is have people only carrying in hand lugagge small items. For most of the crap people carry there is no reason it cant go in the hold (assuming no airline charges), hell it doesnt even take significantly longer at the other end in most european airports.

To do this youd need to stop people being idiots, and stop people being selfish. Not much chance then. Other option is to mke hand luggage allowances smaller before being charged.

Really pisses me off when ive checked a small trolley case to struggle to put my laptop somewhere becasue half the plane have brought their whole fking wardrobe on board as hand luggage, most of which isnt valuable, and isnt needed during the flight.

A tip for having a better chance of available space is sit in an exit row, as you are not allowed hand luggage under the seat due to being an obstruction - most airlines reserve the overhead bins above these rows for the people actually sitting in these rows.

You really havn't flown with Easy Jet for a while have you! You're suggesting a whole load of things there that really aren't possible with EJ. For example, there is a maximum size luggage limit, most people do take there luggage on board because they dont want a)To wait around in the luggage hall only to find that its on the return flight to Alicante or b)To fing there laptop smashed into little pieces by the muppets who work in baggage handling!

Also, this thread was about allocated seating so you cant choose to sit by an exit and yes, most foreign boarding procedures board front and rear of the plane.

They will be charging to put baggage in the overhead compartments soon (according to their recent email to me) so expect this problem to be temporary.

So, as EJ already charge for all hold baggage, if they go ahead and charge for hand baggage too, this means all baggage will have to be paid for with EJ. When will they start charging for having a pee on board, too?

Easyjet is bloody awesome. No complaints from me and since the seating introductions have had two experiences with it. One organised by the Swiss which was carried out amazingly, and another organised by the utter twunts at Luton who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. I think the policy works when it's well implemented and its good for people with families because they can sit together.

I have been on one allocated seating flight with EJ, which was from Nice to Luton. It was a bit of a scrum, but I expect they will tweat it and it will improve. With regards to extra charges, I guess that unless these are kept low, people will drift towards full service airlines.

Informing passengers they can shove things under the seat in front helps save a good few minutes.

Deboarding at the rear is good, but some airlines like to get the cleaners on at the back as deboarding is going on at the front.

Longer single aisle aircraft can be a bit iffy with boarding the rear first, there's a risk of tail tip at times.

It's all got down to the bare minimum now, some airlines can do a turnaround in 25 minutes easily, thats just about the limit as brakes have to cool etc.

Unfortunately these budget airlines have destroyed air travel for me.

We like to go to Tenerife and as far as I can find there are now no longer any full service airlines flying there anymore (direct at least).

So we are now forced to go budget.
