Fully comp insurance to test drive a private sale
Discussion
How do people go about getting some sort of fully comp insurance for a day to be able to test drive a privately sold car?
My insurer (Admiral) will not do this because since the owner obviously already has their own policy, another policy cannot be taken out on that vehicle. Their only suggestion was that he would have to make provisions on his policy to cover for the loss to him.
The annoying thing is that my policy allows me to drive any car that is already insured, but I suspect like all these policies, it will only cover the third party.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Admiral are wrong - you can hold multiple policies on a car, providing that only one is claimed on in the event of an accident.
For ease and speed, a DayInsure company online.
I knew its illegal to have two different policies on the same vehicle, any truth into that? I always wondered how one would get insurance on test drives when sellers asked for fc insurance. For ease and speed, a DayInsure company online.

why not just use the 3rd party cover. The test drive will last what....20 minutes? My insurer (Admiral) will not do this because since the owner obviously already has their own policy, another policy cannot be taken out on that vehicle. Expensive car? Notorious area? Just dont crash, or perhaps a dash cam onboard, that way you will be covered for a non fault.

Not good advice, I remember swapping cars with a mate the next he wrote off mine, thank god we'd added each other as a named driver.Expensive car? Notorious area? Just dont crash, or perhaps a dash cam onboard, that way you will be covered for a non fault.

That's what I would do, but the owner is not keen. It's not a particularly valuable car, but I would be nervous if I was him. Proabably nervous enough to make sure my own insurance would cover this situation if I was him. Expensive car? Notorious area? Thanks for the dayinsure idea. Looks like it would work, but since I'm doing the test drive tomorrow, and they need all sorts of proof of driving licence and NCB etc, I decided to just let him do the driving if he's not happy. I'll need to go back to pay him if we do the deal, so I can test drive it then when I have my full policy in place.
Not easy this buying/selling cars privately malarkey!!

You can do it all online instantly. No paperwork required at all. All you need is your details and driving licence number. Have used it when buying and also helped purchasers arrange when test driving cars i've been selling.

The only sure answer I'm aware of is for him to put you on his insurance as a named driver and you pay any additional premium. I imagine he would want you put down a cash deposit equal to his insurance excess as well. The implications of loss of NCB might aleo need thought....
