A friend asked for my advice today, she bought a car in April this year and today found out the tax was up at the end of October. Since then and now the car has been off the road due to her working abroad. I tell her to check her MOT as well, which unsurprisingly ran out at the same time.

So I ask her to find the tax reminder, she says she didn't remember getting one, so I ask her to find the logbook, which she also can't find.

So I'm thinking the reason a reminder didn't arrive and the lack of logbook is the car has never been in her name. She does have the new owner slip and the car is insured. So I'm going to MOT it on Monday and use the new MOT, current insurance and the new owner lip to tax it. My questions are:

1. Will the old bint in the post office see it hasnt been taxed up to date? Will they ask for back payment? Complain it wasn't sorn?

2. How does she find out if she is the registered keeper? Doubt the Dvla will tell her over the phone?

Before the Internet bashers chime in, the car has not been used untaxed or un-mot'd and will be off the road until its all sorted.

They could only ask for back tax if it's being taxed in the current owners name With a gap to the lapsed disk, but as you are using the new keepers green slip to tax it they will not ask.

Note if the Green slip has previously been used to tax the car it will have a rubber stamp over the barcode and the local post office will not be able to tax it.
