How the FK can you stall an electric train ?

Went to a gig at Brixton O2 last night.
Coming home via train, was waiting for a train out of Baker Street when the announcement comes over the the PA that the train Im waiting for for has "stalled, over the points"....this basically fkd the entire local network "alledgedly"....all on "part suspension, due to stalled train over the points at BS...."
We ended up taking a variety of trains to get us ever nearer home, but still ended up taking a £30 cab ride to complete the journey. At 03.10 instead of what would have been about 1215....
But, I digress.
How the hell is it possible to "stall" an electric train ?
And whay cant you just restart it in a short apce of time ?

Stalled train is merely a train with no forward movement.Most common cause in the tube is that the train has 'gapped', that is the train has stopped where none of the traction shoes are making contact with the juice rails. (Current rails are split into sections and can have gaps in them such as over points and are split into sections so you can immunise a particular section whilst running trains elsewhere on the line).
Most likely in this case is that either the train has lost a few shoes, an aux converter has failed or driver error(stopping in the wrong place).
Also could be a defect like loss of air, stuck brakes,or a hundred other things that can go wrong.

Tube trains have two power rails, the negative one between the running rails and the positive one outside of them, power (traction) being picked up by the trains via shoes that sit on the power rails. There are gaps in the power rails in places such as points because the running rails need to cross where the power rails would be. Therefore tube trains need to have enough momentum to pass over these traction gaps to pick them up on the other side. If a train stops over a traction gap the shoes aren't sitting on a power rail, therefore there is no power supplied to the train.

If that's the case why not have a set of pickups at the front and another at the back. That way it wouldn't matter where the train stopped it would always have a contact.Have you fallen asleep yet?

It could be worse. Watch Chris Tarrant's Extreme Railways - he goes through the longest tunnel in the Congo, the train stalled half way, and they sit there, without any assistance, for eight hours.
At least on LU the ERU will be along with some water and words of comfort after 20 minutes.

Imagine a bus broken down straddling a mini-roundabout right in the middle of town.Then bury it all in a 150 year old tunnel anywhere from 20 to 120 feet below street level with around 6" clearance.

Depends on the definition of the word 'Stall'. On Planes it means loss of forward movement resulting in loss of lift. (followed by a falling sensation and a sudden stop)
I suppose Diesel electric trains which produce their own juice with generators could be stalled in a more conventional way
