Does anyone know someone who could change dif ratio for higher ratio, revs to high at 70 if you ask me! As we go into the future and get more power, surely for cruising and economy reasons it makes sense, plus engine sounds brill at 2100 when pottering along I'm running her in boys!

I asked about having a higher fifth gear in mine, to make cruising down the motorways more relaxed, when the gearbox was out to fix reverse. Was told that the cost of the new gear set would outweigh the fuel savings. I appreciate you are asking about the diff, but that will change the acceleration in all gears, which is not what you are after, surely?

My car has been a lot quieter in the cockpit since I replaced the perished gear lever and handbrake rubber gaiters (under the leatherette ones), following mouse attack. Clearly the 13 year old originals were already scrap when I got the car. It is now quite tolerable at 70.

You might want to check yours. The screws holding the centre section over the transmission tunnel are at each front corner and under the triangle insert at the back. This then lifts off, with a bit of juggling, removing the window switches and the gear knob and handbrake rubber handle, and you should then be able to see the rubber gaiters. I don't think you need to remove the next bit, which is the panel that supports the two oval arm rests.

Replacement gaiters are Ford Sierra or Fiesta from the 80s, as far as I know. I used a Fiesta one sourced for a tenner from Ford for the gear lever gaiter, and chopped down a Granada Coupe one for the handbrake, but a Sierra one might work better.

Actually, thinking about it, I think you can get a look at the rubber gaiters by removing just the leatherette ones. Take the gear knob off, which just simply unscrews, take the handbrake grip off, which just needs a firm twist, and then pull the leather gaiters off.

I've just kinda got used to the deeper sound of revvin so low. Doah. Yeah but if you tune em alot then the extra power makes a higher dif a prospect, so much grunt that it must help outa corners, SC or turbo and you don't need first gear, lol

I wonder if Derek has changed is diff scratchchin

Think there are four or more different diff ratios ..The GKN has the highest ratio but it`s pure luck .

The answer would to have a six speed gear box ..mine would cruise at 70mph around 2000rpm .

That would be the one then, then all that tuning and tightening up might last awhile, could still tour abit, I use a VW transporter. 6th is the same 2000 revs,70mph, you could drive all day and barely wear anything out, it would be great. Mmmm the future???!!

Six speed gearboxs for the LS engine can be purchased new for less than 1k ,im wondering if there is anything out there which could be married up ..!

Ican`t a believe a 5l 340hp should need to be around 2700rpm at 70mph .

The idea of spending loads on engine upgrades just so you can take the edge off it by revving along the motorway when the engine could handle a six gear, got to do something!!

See the mans hilarious, lol lol lol lol. I've just pumped me rear tyres up rock hard, and I'll have a higher flat out figure! Whoever said the bridgetones were good for this car must be a moron and only ever driven banger cars, I hate them, there like new but going in the bin, before I do, I've span the wheels at 95mph in third, can others do this or is it just the bad tyres! 45 deg slide on a motorway is not good for you, bloody exciting mind. Secretly I love it but is that normal. First big Tvr I've owned??? Its just the tyres I know but still, brilliant, lol

The btr diff ratios are available from 2.7 to 3.9,as fitted in the Holden Commodore. BTR became Dana, which became Spicer, I think. As for the T56, they are the worst changing stick shifts I've ever come across and get worse when hot. We had one in a Chim ls1 and gave it the boot after 2 weeks.

I thought the same about my SC Chim. It will race up to the redline in 5th and bounce on the limiter at 165. I thought about putting a longer diff in but the only way to do this is to use an earlier GKN diff from someone like John Reid. I then decided against it as I'd rather have acceleration than top speed (never really going to use 160mph!) but a cruising gear would be nice as my car is rather loud at 70 mph, and 80-90 mph is not usable for any period of time as it's just too loud.

I have heard though that CTS do a 6th gear mod for the T5 whereby you can add an overdrive 6th to the box. When I have cash to burn I will look at this as I think it would solve the problem rather neatly - 1.5k revs should be plenty for 70mph!

Bit like my old MGB, that would be the way to go Nick450, I'm revving at 2450, 70mph sat nav, speedo reads 77? If that's accurate, seems like my dif is already high geared! I read somewhere that the later cars have a Salisbury dif, are there obvious visual diff between GKN and later type? Peeps what's your rev counter reading at 70mph.
