When ar were a lad and on' pull in Leeds town centre you always knew that people were from the lesser salubrious areas when you asked where they were from, if they answered 'Leeds' they were almost certainly from Middleton, Beeston, Belle Isle etc.

Nowadays I note that the Showcase cinema and Ikea both say they are in Leeds which they are not, they are in Birstall, Wakefield.

Ducati in Bradford proudly advertises itself as Leeds, it even says 'Ducati Leeds' on the sign!

I think the worst offender has to be Foxes Biscuits, their delivery trucks regularly trundle through Batley where the biscuits are made, proudly pronouncing they are made in Leeds which they aren't and is some 9 miles away. I guess that is technically illegal?

Any others?

Not to be picky, but I've always thought it called itself Xscape Castleford so I look on their website and they call it Xscape Yorkshire.

This is part of an advertising campaign featuring Vinnie the Danda.
"Champagne from Paris, Shoes from Milan, Biscuits from Batley, Uttoxeter & Kirkham"
Doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Birstalls one of those funny places though I live in Wakey and consider Birstall more part of Leeds. They have 0113 phone numbers but obviously WF postcodes.

Xascape Leeds is pushing it though its virtually in Hull! wink

Drighlington where I come from is similar, most people have no idea where it is and quite often say 'Where, Bridlington?' I usually say I live just up the road from Ikea, everyone knows where the Big Blue box is.
It's on the verge of Kirklees, Bratford (note the proper way to pronounce it ;-)) postcode, Leeds city council and Leeds phone number.

Wouldn't say I lived in Bratford though, puh rolleyes

I work all over the country... When I meet new people they clock the Yorkshire accent and ask where abouts in Yorkshire are you from. I say Skipton ... Most people reply o that's a nice place . People who don't know where Skipton is ask where's that. I say near Bradford . They reply o.

I live in Ilkley, when people don't know where it is I say near Leeds. I used to say in Leeds, but I don't lower myself to that anymore ;-)

confused

I lived round the corner from 6 lanes end and also worked near Ikea and both numbers were 01924. A very long time ago it used to be a nice place to live but today it's quickly becoming another extension of Bradford, just like pretty much everywhere else in between Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax and Brighouse. The only bits that haven't been taken over yet are chav central.

To those of us who live elsewhere in the country, it's actually quite useful. I have never heard of Birstall or Batley or any of these other places with exotic names. I've got a rough idea where Leeds is, though.

That's the point. Outside of Leeds I tell people I live in Leeds, around here I tell them I love in Rawdon. Rawdon is nice anyway.

Just like if people ask where I'm from before I moved here I either say Surrey, or Guildford. Surrey is very broad, and I used to live about 20 mins from Guildford but if I said Haslemere 99% of people would have no idea where that is.

Not exactly sure where it is myself without looking at a map and I'm Yorkshire born and bred. I have a feeling it's somewhere north of Cas and spends half of the year under 1ft of water but I could be mistaken.
