Will this cause a problem:

civic, 06 plate, to change a headlight bulb you have to take out a secondary air intake which otherwise impedes access, all fine & dandy once you've worked out how the clips work to get it out.

Old bulb out of the overtight wiring clip, and straight down in to the now exposed end of this air intake....

Can't get to it, would have to take the undertray off to remove the lower part of the intake, so it's staying there.

Is there a filter between it and the engine? If so, leave it. It might rattle though.

i don't know, I would expect there to be something (even if it's a simple mesh), but the manual tells me only how to take the top part off, not what's below!

A flexible magnetic grabber would do the trick providing you can get purchase on the metal portion of the bulb. Helped me fish out all sorts of mis-placed items, £5 well invested.

I'd be a little concerned what would happen if you hit a bump a little hard and it smashed. Child with small hands?

Where does the actual air filter go for the engine? before it in the intake, or after it?

Are you suggesting there's a risk that a small child might open the bonnet, remove the secondary air intake and stick his/her hand down into the engine and cut themselves on the broken bulb?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

No, he is suggesting employing child labour to remove it without tearing the car apart

Train a ferret* to recover bulbs, then pop it in the pipe. Job done.

The base plates are thin steel aren't they? If so, you need a magnet on a stick or string if you prefer.
