Ah bugger, he has been looking frail of late. Someone who was enthusiastic about his hobby, managed a living out of it and could put it across to newbies with aplomb and had the respect of his peers.

I met him at one of his lectures about 10 years ago; there was a book signing session but disappointingly it was just a rubber stamp.

I was fortunate enough to meet Sit Patrick Moore several times. Absolutely delightful man and his lifelong fascination with Astronomy was a joy to behold, A genuinely inspirational enthusiast he made the sky live for me and millions of others.

I have childhood memories of Sir Patrick brilliantly explaining why the pictures we were waiting for with bated breath, on television, were unavailable due to cloud/conditions etc and every minute was fascinating. In common with Richard Dimbleby, an unexpected break in transmission when Patrick Moore was broadcasting,was an opportunity to listen enraptured to an encyclopaedic dissertation on the subject by one of the most knowledgeable experts in the world with a brilliant delivery. Entertainment in every way!

During WWII in common with so many of his generation I understand that, Sir Patrick was in the RAF giving everything he had to the country he loved without a moments hesitation. Typical of the man, he never wanted any fuss made by the media about his war service.

Sir Patrick Moore was a genuine English eccentric with a huge intellect enormous energy and the zeal for his subject that so many of us lose as we grow up. An outstanding Englishman: we will not see his like again. RIP.
