At first (about a week ago) this seemed like it was just a bruise, but has now got worse and seems more like an infection. Any ideas? Time to get a vet to look at it?

Definitely time to pop to the vets for some investigation. It's hard to tell from the picture but looks like it could just be a wound gone infected or cyst to me. Probably be treated with a antibiotic and anti-inflam.

Is it a Springer, not that it's really relevant? Mine used to scrape that area on the ground sometimes when skidding to a halt and rub the skin off, so perhaps yours has done the same enough to get an infection in there?

Vets for definite.

As above definitely vets. How old is he? I only ask because it has a look of a histiocytoma. Benign little growth often in young dogs. Most go down with the help of steroid cream. Occ they need removing.

But if inf cut, which it also looks like, then a'bios will be needed.

He's young enough for one. They come up suddenly. Some go on there own but some ulcerative, get it ck'd today/tom.

It's always hard to tell from photo alone so I could be way off the mark!! Examination will be the only way to know. It needs tx either way.
