Continuous lights - no idea where to start!

Morning,
Looking at getting a couple of lights for some portrait photos - nothing serious just play for me. Had a look on amazon and online photography stores and I appear to be at a loss as to what I require!
The cheap ones on amazon look like someone has just attached a light bulb to a tripod but then the price of the 'proper' ones jumps up 4 fold. I can't appear to find any medium ground.
My budget is around £200 if anyone can point me in the right direction or offer advice.
