I'm a bit annoyed, as I just put £97 of petrol in the car, and DEFINITELY asked for a VAT receipt, but it was busy, I was in a hurry, and now when I get back to submit my claim I see they have not given me a VAT receipt.

So do I write it off, or can I get it back? The ironic thing was I used my £7.50 off voucher for using my Shell card, but they've actually cost me MORE money than this by not giving me what I asked for.

Go back to the filling station with your till receipt, and ask them for a manual VAT receipt.

No it definitely isn't.

Looks I'll have to try. Its not on my normal route unfortunately though.

Don't know if they would accept this.

They might not, but if it comes to your individual petrol receipts being scrutinised then this will be the least of your worries, I think.

Explain?

All I need it for is to claim the VAT back on petrol, as promised by my employer. I doubt very much they would scrutinise it - they have no reason to.

If it was only a small amount I wouldn't bother but its nearly £100 of fuel.

I presumed that it was your own VAT claim. My point was that if they come to audit you, then a receipt without the proper VAT breakdown on it is a small issue compared to whatever else they find, and they always find something.

If it's Shell, all their receipts these days are VAT receipts. Take another look at it - the VAT info is probably on there somewhere.

OP, I feel your pain.

This morning, when I asked for my usual white, Grande Americano at Starbucks, I was given it black! This meant I had to put milk in it myself!

I'm still shuddering with rage now, frankly.

Should really have started a thread about it in fact.

Reminds me of my weekend out asking for a Black Russian and ending up with a White one.

When I've not had VAT receipts in the past I've always just worked the VAT out myself and for reference phoned or gone on the website to attain the VAT No. and put that on the receipt as well. There isn't any issue in doing this if what you've purchased has VAT on it unless it's entertainment for example but then those sort of receipts I don't really want going through the books biggrin

Slightly off topic but I recently contacted Shell Customers Services about receipts. Their garages used to give a VAT receipt and a separate CC receipt. Fine, one for expenses and one for checking against CC statements.

Since the introduction of a combined receipt, there is an increasing reluctance on the part of the garages to issue two pieces of paper. After a further request they usually accede but some argue and one, Shell Penrith, recently refused outright.

Shell customer service are apologetic but make the point that the garages are run by independent retailers and they are responsible for the workings of the site(s).

Considering the high percentage of the population that need a VAT receipt for fuel, I have no idea why all the till receipts are not VAT receipts. ALl they have to do is replace **This is NOT a VAT receipt** with the VAT number and relevant percentage and job done.
