Friday I had a bit of a ride around in a C63 AMG Black at Brooklands. This is one of my all time favourite cars, and I was looking forward to the experience.

The car was white, with the optional aero pack giving it MASSIVE presence, exactly how the blacks should look, expect, from the passenger seat at least, the bark didn't match the bite.

I guess I was hoping for an in-your-face experience, as every review I've read of it defines the car as an assault on your senses, but from the inside it was somewhat disappointing quiet. It also felt a little slow, but then I'd just been out in an SLS, which was a beast.

Anyway, I convinced them to let me record the exhaust note on a launch, so it could be compared to the SLS.

The SLS wins on noise.

Of course the SLS sounds better, it's being revved a damn sight harder hehe but it does also sound a little less silenced, making it more "hard-edged" in its tone.

And it's very true that your perception of a car is heavily skewed by what you just got out of, I imagine if you turned up and then went in the C63 immediately it would feel very impressive, but when you've just been in a faster, deliberately more focused car, it'll naturally underwhelm a little!

I know this is a bit of a mute point, but the F1 pace car (SLS) and medical car (C63 AMG) were doing laps of Monza on the thursday before the race this year and the C63 sounded a lot more vocal that the SLS. Both were doing full chat down the start/finish straight and the noise from the Medical Car was noticably deeper than the SLS (which was still packing quite a punch!)

You can hear the medical car chasing the SLS at 1:12 into the vid, and it's far more vocal. Sounds really good, especially on the downshifts. I need a C63 with that exhaust.

It's only a mute point if you can't hear it.

I guess you did this at Merc World? I live around the corner from there. Always a great place to pop in!
