Evening all,

A friend has offered me a tidy 04 plate RX8 with a knackered engine for £600, after posting a few bits and bobs regarding LS engine swaps my first thought that this could be a great base car for me.

I've read a few different LS engine swap threads, most recently one of the chaps from dyno tourque who has dropped a 5.7 LS1 into an BMW and I like the idea of doing something a little different with a heap of poke and a noise to die for.

Now I have pretty much zero mechanical ability and so would need the likes of dyno tourque to carry out all works but I'm worried about what a car with this sort of conversion would be like to live with and have a few questions:

1 - Would all dials/guages etc work as per factory? I don't relish having a car that I am constantly having niggles with as that would drive me insane.

2 - What sort of changes would be made to the suspension/brake set up? I'm worried about weight distribution and being able to maintain decent drive ability.

3 - Cost, what would you expect to pay from drop off to collection? subjective I know depending on spec etc but if anyone has done similar I'd love a ball park idea.

I think that's it, Thanks.

Why not give dynotorque a call?

Knowing their work, I'd be surprised if the factory dials don't work!

You have no real Mechanical Knowledge, save yourself a whole world of pain and steer clear!

Or, get a replacement RX8 engine perhaps?

The quality does indeed look spot on, obviously I have zero reason doubt their integrity but I was hoping to maybe get some first hand feedback from people who have looked into it and those who swallowed a brave pill and took the plunge.

Look for papercups thread in reader's cars. Lots of info on the conversion there.

Everything should work perfectly and no niggles, that is if you are paying for a proper job and you will pay a lot for a full transplant that drives like it came from the factory.

Well over 10k

I'd love to do an LS conversion in my Tuscan but 20k+vat puts me off (that's not dynotorque btw and that's a new ls3)

It's ideal for people who can do the vast majority themselves as I gather there's a huge amount of labour but I'm not sure how 20k is achieved still.

My MR2 Roadster conversion all said and done (that does drive like a factory car just a lot quicker) was about £5K. No economic sense at all but I do have a car that I have zero intention of changing, its brilliant.

It's an interesting proposal where the purchase of the car could be less than 5% of what you spend.

I bet it's awesome. The Ls engine really is a peach. I've driven a ls3 corvette and the engine was great and passengered briefly in a 480ish bhp Tvr griff which was nothing short of fking brutal, really fking brutal!

Do you have a reader's rides thread for your MR2 by any chance?

I would want to make sure it was a proper job, for someone with my level of mechanical ability I think it would be sensible to pay the right people, the right money and get it done properly.

In an ideal world I'd hope a factory finish feel could be achieved and I could treat it in the same way I do my 350z ie, don't do a huge amount of mileage but like to enjoy the miles that I do as much as i can.

Problem with later cars is the ECU drives lots of other things as well as the engine.

With old cars the engine ECU was usually separate and the gauges just ran off their own senders - not so with modern cars.

Call Craig but expect it to cost circa £15k once everything is fully sorted or possibly WGT I know Pip does engine conversions and last year one of his customers was well on the way to cracking the RX8 codes.
