What sub £12k two seater sports car for the old man....
Discussion
My Dad has decided he's got a little spare money and wants to buy a 2 seater sports car as a bit of fun.
It must be comfortable and cover large distances (UK to South of Spain), with comfort and be able to fit a set of golf clubs in the boot...
Budget is an absolute max £12,000.
So far suggestions have been the BMW Z4, Mazda MX5 and SLK.....

1989 to 2001 Mercedes-Benz SL500.
I have taken mine to southern Spain several times. The car is made for it. They are fast, sure-footed, reliable, comfortable, practical, a pleasure to own. There are several threads in the Mercedes forum here which give good buying advice, in particular this one: http://pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f...
£12k buys the best, quite frankly.
The other thing is, they will do 400miles, maybe more if light of foot, on a single 18gallon tank, which a lot of moderns with their 12gallon tanks won't: makes a big difference when you're driving the length of whole countries, I can tell you.

something like this, pushing £12K and with a few miles (stolen from Maserati thread) http://www.hamiltongrays.com/2002-52-maserati-4200...
Got to be honest....the SL does sound good. I'm not sure my Dad would enjoy an S2000 much. It's a little too sporty if you know what I mean.

I also quite like the idea of the Lexus, although he doesn't seem that keen! He's still liking the Z4 but I don't like the Bangle version. I was hoping the newer Z4 would be available for about £15k but there's nothing yet...

Got to agree with an SL, this should be just the ticket for a jaunt to the seaside...
