Hi, hope someone can help, my GT3 would not start this morning, just clicks as if the battery is flat. The lights and the key fob works fine so I do not think it is a problem with the battery.

I have turned the ignition key to the left to re set the immobiliser and I am pushing the clutch pedal down.

Any thoughts or help appreciated

Cheers
Simon.

You sue the lights are bright ... does sound like a duff battery not delivering the amps required.

Stick it in gear and rock it and then try again.

Lights working isnt an indicator of the battery cranking power. Sounds like the cold has killed it and lacks the power to turn the engine over. Try a battery booster pack or jump start from a good battery (or just put it on charge if you can wait)

If that doesn't fix it, it's worth checking the engine ground strap hasn't become corroded. Take it off & give it a good seeing to with a wire brush to ensure proper connections.

My 997 GT3 has done this twice .

First time it needed a new starter under warranty .

Second time it was the battery .

My bet is its the battery.

My old 997.1 became increasingly reluctant to start, with exactly the same symptoms. Battery didn't sort it - it needed a new starter under warranty. That was at 4 years old and 12000 miles. The new starter turned a lot faster than the original, so it had probably been on the way out for a while.

It's a common problem, it seems!

Thanks All, will not take a charge at all so either battery is knackered or the starter...

Will bung a new battery on and see if that works otherwise hopefull that starter can be replaced under warranty

I will let you all know

Thanks Pete, I changed the battery and that has no sorted the problem out, looks like it will be a starter motor then !!

Would do it myself if it was not in such an awkward place

..If you have a new battery, it's possible it's the switch under the clutch pedal..
I did however have to put a new starter on my 7.1 GT3 so it does happen..

This, before you go to the expense of a new starter motor.

The start of your starter motor playing up. Real common issue on gt3's

Or the ignition switch. On the 996 the switch is available individually from the lock itself so cheap and easy to fix. I assume 997 has the same setup where it can be changed individually, though it uses a different column so there's always a chance it's been "improved".

997 ignition switch very different to 996 - steering lock is via remote electric solenoid instead of mechanical assembly and the switch is actually uncoded (any 997 key shaft will fit).

My money is on sticking starter; 997.1 gt common issue. If the clutch switch was faulty you'd get the 'depress clutch' warning on the dash after holding the key in the crank position

Cool.
The 997 cup doesn't use the 997 steering column, it used the 996 column so I didn't know how similar it was since I've never seen one.. I was correct in my guessing that it was "improved" using no scientific method at all lol.
