Peugeot vs Raleigh TI (again)

Hi

I'm a fan of old steel bikes and the history of the sport, so I'm drawn to these 'recreations' of classic bikes. I'm not in the market for anything like this, I'm happy with the bikes I've got (apologies to N+1) but I wouldn't mind a go on one and would be interested to hear what others felt about them and how they would stack up against a comparatively priced 'modern' designed bikes with sloping top tube, ali and carbon etc. I'll hold my hands up and say I've not ridden a modern road bike either but get my kicks on a 5-speed 70s Peugeot tourisme hommes.

Part of me thinks they would be a lovely ride with a lot of class and nod to the not neccesarily best known heroes of the past like Zoetemelk and Thevenet, but the other half of me thinks that you would be laughed at for being such a poseur and and daft for not spending your hard earned on a decent modern bike (with an old steely in the shed)

They do have a lot of appeal.

I have an old Raliegh special projects Ti tubed / steel lugged frame. Dynatech I think they were sold under the name of.

It's a lovely old beast and almost entirely original apart from a set of old Look forks. Just a shame it's on the small side for me.

I can recommend tracking down a Dynatech on ebay in your size.

I would love an old classic Raleigh in the Red team colours. I bet they are so comfortable compared to todays offerings.

And Joop and Bernard are certainly in the first half dozen names if I were to be asked name ten world famous cyclists of years gone by. Joop would probably be top three

I guess it depends on how far back you go...my mind always jumps to Merckx, Coppi, Bartali, Anquetil, Gaul....but I get your point!

To my eye, bikes like these look 'lighter' more lively and precise compared to modern bikes with their thicker tube diameters and carbon wheels. Look at the old YouTube footage to see what I mean

For £2000 I was expecting something a little more exotic than Reynolds 525 tubing, lovely wheels though, they will roll forever so at least they got that bit right!

I'd love to run an old 504 estate logo'd up as a Tour team car! Interesting that the Raleigh team in that '77 Tour clip were also using Peugeots.

I saw this on Ebay as well and is a lovely old thing, although I understand it might not be to everybody's taste. I can just picture my old Pug on the roof of that just off the ferry for our own Petit Tour de France. The bike'd probably be quicker though, and that's saying something.

Yes that is expensive for the Raleigh. But at least it has a 'period' quill stem.
The Peugeot's aheadset stem just looks wrong on a retro build imho.

I've an original team frame (albeit no longer red), and can confirm that they do ride beautifully!

As the proud (very) of an Ilkeston built 753 Raleigh I'd heartily recommend finding one of these for much less than the £2000 for the recreation. Mine is a thing of beauty (there's a thread on here about it a while back)!& it rides in a way that no other bike I've owned does. The truth is, it really shifts if you press on. It really is special & unless a cheque for a daft sum was waved under my nose, I'd never sell it.

That said...that Pug does look good.

I guess I'm falling on the side of the Peugeot if I had to make a choice. I am a sucker for continental stuff when it comes to cycling. But that takes nowt away fom the TI.

Ah yes, I remember it. I know it is subjective, but the more recent white and blue livery just doesn't do it for me like the 70s red and black.

Quite! In my defence, I would have kept it original but some numpty of a previous owner disguised it as a Colnago, of all things. So I did this:
