In the realm of not even luke warm family hatches i keep getting drawn by the version with the slightly larger rear spoiler, colour coded side skirts etc. I'm not after massive performance but that body kit gives it that sporting look.

For a short time, 10-12 years ago, i was obsessed by an MG ZS, no no it wasnt just badge engineering. Fortunatley i was cured and that sickness didnt cost me any money. But I suppose classic british sports cars werent big on power, they were an expression of freedon maybe.

Now i'm into my 40s i ought to be looking at grown up cars, but they all seem to be German.

Does that factory fitted body kit do it for you even if the BHP isnt there? Or is it a bit sad?

It depends on the car really.
Some cars have huuuuge spoilers and wings that always look a little overdone.

It would often be that new models of the Jap rally cars, the Subaru and Mitsi Evo didn't tend to be driven by younger people as they'd cost to much to buy and run.

You car should look however you want it to look. Why should age make any difference?

I'm not going to de-spoiler my Elise when I hit 50, and I'm certainly not going to replace it with something beige when I hit 60.

You could get one of those nice German cars with a spoiler which rises at speed and avoid driving round town looking like a moron.

(Mind you, there is a little button to let you raise it in town if that's your "thang"!!)

Sorry mate. Not sure I understand any of your ramblings. 40 is hardly old and even if it was, why on Earth would you want to be sensible?? Plus buy what you like and don't give a damn what you think others think about it.

Why care what others think? If you like it and want it then get it.

Lifes too short.

How does having a spoiler or wing on your car make you look like a "moron"?

Age 53 - Mustang GT and Fiesta ST so I'd say no.
I DO think you get too old for stripes though (maybe).

I do like the idea of a Phaeton or a Bentley Arnage but think I'd find them boring to look at after a short while. I've always wanted to drop a black Rolls Silver Shadow and fit drainpipe exhausts.

I'm 52 soon, and I drive a Honda Accord Coupe with a spoiler. (and it's a big fk off spoiler)

And <gasp> it's an automatic too!

Did I mention the 17" wheels and low profile tyres?

Banish me now!

Surely the spoiler is there for a reason (downforce etc)? What's that got to do with your age? I realise that it's use may be dependent on how fast you drive, but I'm not aware of any restrictions (beyond the normal) as you age?

I'd estimate that in 99.9999999% of applications that isn't the case.

Reduced lift and lower drag are more likely than positive downforce. And yes some are likely styling driven, but most probably serve a purpose even if it is to a lesser degree.
