Picked up my new (to me) MX-5 last Saturday. Now it’s obviously not the quickest thing in the world but what a difference it makes to drive a car that likes to rev. I’m used to driving a turbo diesel as a daily driver and the mazda has nowhere near the same torque but instead changing up at 2500rpm I’m having great fun extending the motor all the way to the 7200rpm red line. No turbo lag either and the car will quite happily pootle along at 25mph in 6th if required. One advantage of the car not being that quick is the fun that can be had at lower speeds. The MX-5 has definitely reinforced my view that lots of power does not always equal lots of fun.

They are lovely to drive and I love the gear shift on them. Last time I drove one I had a (nearly) interesting moment around a left bend with my heavy right foot, a wet road surface and a brick wall lol.

ITR (and probably any Type-R Honda) are the revviest cars I've driven, and are hugely satisfying when in the mood. They sound awesome as well.

I know how you feel. My S2000 on a summers day with the roof down at 9000rpm is pure bliss.

You should try a car with a bike engine (or just a bike). driving

The Type R is king here, I love the snappy throttle and the howling tone they have. I love having the relaxed manners of a regular 2.0l up to 3000rpm, and if you hold the gear the induction and exhaust notes start to intensify, before it passes the VTEC change over at 5800rpm and then races for the redline. Turboa have their place, but they don't make me smile like a VTEC.

I have to say the VTEC in my old ITR is as intoxicating in its own way as the V6 lump in my 350Z (along with its SS exhaust and induction kit). Proper "race car for the road" howl in them. They are a bit anti-social in some ways, though. But fk those who are offended!

The VVTLi engine in the Celica is the highest revving car I've driven. The redline is around 8200 revs so it really screams smile

However, I've had the MX-5 out again for the past week and although it's slower and older, it doesn't half make the Celica feel dull. frown

I prefer the best of both worlds. Turbos and revs smile

My bike cruises at 5,500rpm in top gear. At 7,000rpm it's just waking up yum

I know someone who was giving serious consideration to turbocharging the R1 in his car, but I think he decided that 500bhp/tonne was adequate for now.

Well after you've had a GT-R, Aston, Ferrari and many other high end cars you would recommend a Toyota.

Revs thread and no rotary heads commented yet? Suppose i'll wade in with the 9000+ limit of my old rx8! Sounded awesome and felt ridiculous at the limiter, waiting for the beep was a highlight of every journey...on the odd occasion it actually worked that is, had to sell it before it drove me insane, but i still miss it though, replaced with leon cupra if anyone was curious

This thread makes me want to get the MX-5 out the garage for one last high rev run before the snow gets here.

I loved the little 1.8 v6 in my old MX-3 for revs, probably the quickest revving car i have owned and those 6 cylinders did sound awesome at 7000+rpm
