Is there nothing better? I don't care that it's glue, chemicals and plastic in most cars because I just want to smell it all day long. I'm sure new cars of a few years ago had a 'better' new car smell but I still like it even today. If it was bottled I'd stick my head in for hours.

In a similar vein I love the musty smell of a true classic. The passing of time, the cracked leather the smell of oil and engine...superb.

That's it really paperbag

I got to the point selling new that I couldn't smell it any more.

Now I can't smell the smell of old Porsches, leather, oil etc. Apparently I come home from work smelling slightly of old Porsches though.

Manufacturers have departments working on car smell would you belive. Hondas are very distinctive ( in a plastically sort of way)

Love the old stuff.

I once drove a pretty good condition Sierra Sapphire Cosworth RS500 and the smell was godly. It was even better than new carpet, which is saying something!

I love the smell of old plant machinery aswell. Smells oily, with hints of hydraulic fluid. Bliss.

I also agree with Garlick's post - we need someone to create Eau du New Car Interior.

I find cars from different countries have different smells. German cars, such as my Passat or my Grandad's old 325 tds have a smell that I really like. French cars smell like cheap air freshener.

My Dad had a Gold (yes, Gold.) Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II that had damp... it wreaked of must to the point where the landlord at the local often said "You've come in the Roller haven't you?".

Rolling on to the RR Owners Club stand at a local car show with Snoop Dogg blasting out the stereo was also a highlight of his brief foray into RR ownership.

It's the stuff they put on the dashboard plastics to make them so lickable.

If my car has leather seats I ALWAYS use Gliptone cleaner/conditioner on it. It makes modern chemically tanned leather smell like leather should and used too. Nothing like it IMO.

On the flip side....

There was something that ford used in the escort MK1. I dont know what, a type of glue, fabric, foam or a combination? But for me its a particular smell all MK1's have that no other car has. This smell reminds me of my youth as my parents had a couple and my uncle had a mint 30,000 mile, 1300e he basically gave away 6 weeks before I was 17 (to call him a tit is an understatement).

This may be one of the reasons they are my all time favourite car and a minter would be my first lottery win vehicle.

Modern Audis smell like cat sick.

You're not supposed to dab it behind your ears...

My 944 is a bit whiffy, it isn't unpleasant, old leather, mouldering cardboard and the 1980's, I quite like it, its a a bit like the smell of the Dog, I don't think Calvin Klein would arrive it as a fragrance but it smells familiar and comforting.

My 944 is like the dog in that it smells normal most of the time and then occasionally really offends the nostrils, the dog due to his High Protein Predator/Dustbin oriented diet and the 944 when some oil drops from the weepy rocker cover onto the hot exhaust, both arrive without warning and make me gag a bit.

New car smell is great and why i always buy new every three years, my 1 series still smells like it although its always kept mint i never use any type of chemical cleaner, bullst silicone or any other tarting up interior polish/cleaners which make everything shiny, car is just vacuumed and the dash ect again just vacuumed with the dusting brush attachment.
Some used cars which come in though smell positively horrific. Why some people think the public toilet type urinal block smell is ok in their car is beyond me though. Had an immaculate looking Fiesta a couple of weeks ago a guy was looking to trade but upon opening the door the smell of follow through,pi55 and barf combined with the statutory care home type air freshener tying in vain to cover up the stench was pretty rancid..
