I realise this would have been all the van drivers fault (before the cyclists apologists start), but this young mans mummy doesn't know how lucky she was this afternoon !

Cyclist not looking, dark clothing, no lights and riding on pavement? Or am I missing something?

The only thing you're missing, and you don't have any way of knowing, is they are actually on a cycle path (when they aren't crossing the junction).

What has being on a cycle path got to do with anything? They rode across a road without looking/chanced it

It's what all kids do, isn't it?

At that age, the difference between "nothing" and tragedy is measured in inches

TBH, the vid may distort distances involved

Raises an interesting question - is an exit off a roundabout legally treated the same way as a side street in terms of giving way to people crossing?

Lucky would have been the second cyclist trying to make it across and the van driver skidding to a halt and missing. That looks like typical riding from kids on bikes and when I see kids pissing about on roundabouts on foot or otherwise I'm already going slow just for this reason.
I had a close call the other day a kid on a bmx shot the wrong way around a car park, he appeared from behind a parked lwb van and was going fast enough to end up skidding to a halt right in-front of me while I was already stopped. However I was expecting a motorist (or kid on a bike for that matter) coming the wrong way around a one way car park or even the odd berk pushing a trolley while looking over their shoulder oblivious to what could be approaching, therefore I was already going extra slow as a precautionary measure, and I mean slow as in not even the car park's 10mph implied speed limit which would've been too fast in this instance.

I'd say yes, but a lot of islands have pedestrian refuges, as this one did.

What that video didn't convey was, because the driver of the van had summer tyres on during a cold wet day, his reaction times were immediately higher, and his impressive forward thinking ability already anticipated the kid on the bike- therefore he had slowed down enough to avoid the accident.

In fact, the kid was in no danger at all.

I've come much closer to meeting my maker when cycling. Last time was cycling around a roundabout and a van pulling onto it without looking missing me by a few feet.

Couldn't convey that, because it's nonsense. (you don't mean reaction times do you?)

The one thing that gets me at the moment regarding kids bikes. How are these BMX's that have NO brakes fitted allowed to be sold at all? The amount of times I've seen kids on these come close to either hitting pedestrians or not stopping for roads is getting silly now and they're always on the same kind of bike....

Reminded of when I actually saw some skillz!!

A while ago, in urban stop start I started and a kid literally jumped a bike off the pavement in front of me, I braked and he was stationary about a foot from the front of my car balanced on his front wheel. He looked at me sheepishly then bounced his bike, still all on the front wheel, backwards and with a big hop back onto the pavement.

We exchanged nods and I was on my way but I'm still a little freaked that that's possible.
