Hi
I have a newly built garage (8mx6m) and it is insulated very well.

That being said with the temp so low and me planning on spraying in there over Christmas I need to buy a heater of some sort.

Anyone got any ideas as to what would be the best, most cost effective way to do this??

I had a look at Machine Mart on-line and they do 3kw electric fan heaters for about £60. I am led to believe that they are expensive to run though?

I am not out there that much but when I am I would like it warm.

Many thanks

Would not be running whilst spraying...

More to warm the garage and the panels BEFORE spraying

Ah OK. In that case, I think a Calorgas type heater is probably cheaper to run than an electric one?

I suppose something like this: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/...

ETA: And £60 is silly money for a 3kw fan heater. You can get them for about 20 quid.

I think gas fires will add moisture to the air, something that an electric heater won't do.

I can't imagine that the cost of running a heater will be very high compared to the cost of paint (or paying someone else to spray it)

The last car I sprayed we used fan heaters to get the temp up an dthen switched them off when we started spraying.

A little bit, yes.

would prefer oil filled rads than electric fan heater.

cost easy to work out, find what your supplier charges per kw hour and then times that amount but the units used on the device. e.g. 3kw hour device @ 20p kw hour = 60p an hour to run.

Even if it was perfectly insulated, it will take a while for 3kw to heat up a space that large. smile

A couple of 1.5kW oil heaters will do, as long as you've not got a mad rush to heat the space up it'll keep the heating nice and even. £45/each and B&Q, although I'm sure you can get one slightly cheaper.

yes I think a lot of it comes down to forward planning. If it's well insulated, 3kw will be fine as long as you know that you're going to want the warmth a few hours in advance.

Oil filled is probably the way to go then - you can leave them running while you spray too, since there's no exposed heating elements or flames. I'd start off with one or two 1.5kw radiators, then you can always add more if it's not enough.

If you do go above 3kw, you'll need to check that your wiring can cope with it. The garage should have a 26 amp ring installed, but it's possible it'll just be a 13 amp spur. Don't forget that your compressor will be drawing a fair chunk too if you do use them while you're spraying.

Done simillar.

Remember to crack a window though to remove moisture, or you create a humid environment.

Pop to Argos (other stores exist) get a couple of cheap (£10-£20) fan heaters...... Leave them on full chat for an hour. Warm. Spray.

We then let the fumes out. Gave it 15mins. Then left one heater on for a couple of hours to maintain a constant temp

You wouldn't if you had ever seen one with a faulty thermostat boil its oil and explode all over the office in a ball of flame!

I wouldn't have one of those again if you paid me, thank you.

I just resprayed my car with a diesel space heater running behind be. Not the smartest idea, but nothing bad happened. The cleaner the diesel the better.

I was thinking that too - what's the ceiling height, and is it flat, or an apex roof?

In coldish weather I'm dubious 3KW would even be noticeable.
