There is an experimental class. It's called Garage 56, as its only participant is located in the 56th Garage in the pits (pretty clever of the ACO!).
This year's sole contender is the GreenGT, a hydrogen powered monstrosity:

Not keen on that idea. Its a race, for race cars. Not marketing tools.

Are you sure the racecars are there solely for race purposes? Not a little tiny bit of marketing involved?

Not that I am complaining of course, because without some marketing related budget, there won't be any racecars!

While I see your point, at least Quattros are designed and built to set of racing rules and regs and are not just a convenient billboard.

But anyway.. I believe the new ALMS/GA series is trying to accomodate the Delta Wing?

Yes, but they adhere to the same rules, hence why it is a race.

If we allowed many experimental type cars then it would be lots of different cars, with no relevaance to one another, showcasing that particular car company's future technology (be it diesel, hybrid, 4wd, 3 wheels, whatever).

I agree with you both! Of course it has to stay a level playingfield for all cars. And with that I mean that the same rules must apply to all cars. Experimental stuff, OK, but then for all contenders! (Which will result in an Audi or Toyota walkover.)

this is where i am coming from , i love the prototypes lmp1 and lmp2, but the impact the delta wing made was way above any car raced at le mans that i can remember, there was only one racing , but everybody remembers that one car. yes as an advertising tool nissan saw the potential.....it would be interesting to hear from nissan about the hype it created ..
i was at the classic a few years ago watching the gas turbine car ....wow !
remember the outcry when they announced diesels racing at le mans

Now that would be very interesting indeed biggrin

Scarey thought of where they may end up though; truly an unrestricted formula.

Never gonna happen, but I would very much like to see a 'box' class.
And by that I mean a class with only two rules:
-a minimum weight, say 600 kgs.
-the car has to fit in a carshaped box. Seize and shape of that box to be determined by the ACO.

So as long as the car is 600 kgs. or above, and fits in that box, everything goes:
-L4, L6, L8, L10, V4, V6, V8, V10, V12
-KERS in all it's disguises
-3 or 4 wheels. Hell, why not 6?
-All aero tricks imaginable, including Chaparal 'Suckercar'

(Courtesy of a certain mr. Gordon Murray for giving me this idea)

I completely agree biggrin

I fear not many tracks would be able to house them, though, for the speed they could go

And when Alan McNish decides to overtake 2 cars in 1 go, he will then get launched at 400+ kph, which will end very very badly for the audience and journos standing in his line of destruction....
Ain't gonna happen!

Or when <insert Toyota driver name> crashes in to <insert random car just going around the circuit>.
